In about 5 billion years, the sun will run out of hydrogen. Our star is currently in the most stable phase of its life cycle and has been since the formation of our solar system, about 4.5 billion years ago. Once all the hydrogen gets used up, the sun will grow out of this stable phase.
I suppose and can only imagine life here on our planet will begin to become untenable at that point.
The weekend or two before this calamity would be a great time to set up at a small local coin show here in Idaho and offer up a few of my coins.
I have a roll of GEM 1976 quarters I've been trying to unload.
The good news is the glowing and fast approaching heat of the sun should keep the hotdogs warm.
apparently it needs to be done before a divorce
The first time was funny. The second time interesting. Now it’s just lame.
I do not have enough money saved for retirement to last for 5 billion years.
The best time was yesterday. The second best time is today.

I will sell my collection at the first to occur of the following:
I don’t know, but when I do I’m gonna make it rain with copper memorials instead of my cash money.
Apparently the entire forum just ignored cougar 10 years ago.
Apparently, he also has a stalker.

Are you, by chance, implying that as a group, the forum was smarter until now?

Is it Cougar week on the forum?
An interesting and quite salient question . . . . . .
I enjoy the collections I have, and would most likely continue to enjoy them (mostly just rotating inventory of stuff I do at local shows). I think if I am still able to enjoy the hobby at all (mentally and physically as I age further) . . . I would keep my coins.
But to continue a clear answer . . . .if I pass, I have set up the options in advance for my spouse. Until then . . . and as long as I can still enjoy them . . . I will keep them.

I would wrap your gem roll of bicentennial quarters in aluminum foil and put in your freezer to maintain purity. Or else put them in your vehicle for drive through purchases. The fast food personnel like unusual coinage.
I plan on actively collecting for the next few years... until retirement. At that point, I can foresee cycling parts of my collection through (trading this for that) for a few years. If my eyesight wanes or if I ever lose interest or if there's a "bucket list" trip I need to take before I pass this mortal coil, I can revisit it... but at this point, I'm planning on the next show!

My hoard will go to charity. (most of it). But more likely it will burn up along with my house, due to climate change. I guess there's always the "burial under a new oak tree" plan. The tree serves as a marker along with a treasure map. Apparently people used to do that with gold in 'them thar hills' https://americanhistory.si.edu/explore/exhibitions/value-money/online/new-acquisitions/saddle-ridge-hoard
Much sooner than that this will happen: Gliese 710, an orange dwarf star, is predicted to pass within 0.1663 light-years of the Sun in approximately 1.29 million years. While this close approach could dislodge comets from the Oort Cloud, causing a potential comet shower. Smart money will sell before that event.
I heard boating accidents are terrible events where guns and gold are often lost.
I already reached the point of selling most of my collection but I'm not leaving the hobby. Just trying to get the collection under control.
I just hope that the quality certified especially registry coins don't just go into climate controlled storage for 10 years but keep getting shared with other hobbyists.
Just waiting for the right selfless act

So, to those at the point of "cashing out" and have a mix of raw coins (albums and 2x2's) and certified material... what's your approach to divestment? Do you sell off all the certified coins first? Keep anything??
I'm thinking about this as it applies to my own 7070... but I don't want to hijack this thread...

Apparently, many of you know Cougar. Is he still around? Could you please let us newbies in on the joke?
I sold almost all of it last week. Then another collection or two came in and it’s a good question. I’m going to try again, tomorrow.

God comes first in everything I do. I’m dedicated to serving Him with my whole life. Coin collecting is just a hobby—but even in that, I seek to honor Him. ✝️

I did last month. With the exception of my Seated Liberty coins, I sold everything. I’m 80 years old, so it’s time.
I have everything set up in my estate plan. Wife and family get their pick of what they like, the rest gets sold per specs of the trust document. Don't want some vulture at the door offering the wife 10 cents on the dollar before I'm buried.

I REALLY need to do this.
Started awhile back and divested a fair amount, but still have a lot more to go, even with planning to keep the core sets.

About the time eBay started collecting sales tax I decided that at my age there was no sense putting more money into coins. I've gotten rid of a lot of them, but still have some saved back. That was one reason I responded to the recent post by Mr Babula the way I did. I do have some health issues [nothing life threatening], but I would have ZERO desire to have to dispose of bags of loose common coins. One of my conditions requires that I take Lyrica/PeGabalin and the major side effect is that on a scale of 1-10 my ambition quotient is about a 2. Some days even doing nothing is a challenge.
I've been selling off some firearms and while I don't have many left I'll probably give most of my slabbed coins to my daughter.
If I was to luck into a significant sum of money I might start accumulating Morgans and Walkers again.
Yeah, I have a detailed spreadsheet, showing every coin I own, with price I paid and Greysheet value. When I'm dead, I won't care what happens to my coins (if I didn't sell them first), but it would be a shame if my heirs gave them away.
