Capped Bust Half Dime - from Unc Deetz to MS64 across the street

I've been watching this 1829 LM-2 (R1) for a long long time. Here is its NGC cert page. It's pretty, but $3465 seems a lot to ask for an Unc details. Sad that it doesn't "pop" more to accent the color (see reverse, not in this post).
But now I see it's available here for $1500, in an MS64 straight graded holder. (Or here on eBay for $1575). Here is its NGC cert page.
Now, I'm sure I own some coins that were once in details holders and now are straight graded. I'm not pointing any fingers... if I like a coin, I buy that coin. We all have our journey! But the fact that it's concurrently for sale in two places, in two different holders, both of which are still deemed valid on the NGC Verification page, is a bit unusual.

That price tag of $3465 for the details slab sure makes the straight grade slab it's in now for less than half the price look like a bargain. Wonder if that's intentional.
Who knows in the world of marketing and the stuff people come up with, just saying 🙂
Thats interesting that it straight graded the second time. Do you have close-up pics?
The original seller probably sold it and never took down the listing. He has a few coins in details slab that have been mentioned here over the years. Some of them had descriptions saying they weren’t details or that they were proofs when the holder said business strike. This is one example where he would have been correct that the coin can straight grade. Maybe he should try sending in a few of his other details examples.
I am not convinced they are the same coin. Any exact marks?
There is a small spot between the leaves on the reverse at 7 o'clock. The reverse streaking also matches.
Was the original 'overvalued' coin from our famous dealer who always thinks his graded coins are under graded?

Agreed. The toning differs from coin to coin.
The lighting differs not the toning.

Never a slave to one plastic brand will I ever be.
If buying from photo's only, the first set would be far more enticing to me than the second set. And I do feel it is the same coin due to the reverse mark.

Reason why both cert numbers are still valid is because the coin got cracked out of the details slab and resubmitted raw, without the old cert being turned in yet. Nobody regrades a coin in a details holder.
I do not like that icy blue toning, and I think details artificial tone / questionable color is the more accurate description that should be on the label.
This is a major red flag coin to quickly steer clear from.
Jim is right on here. I didn't post the reverse but the closeup photos at the Julian site and the new eBay photos make it unmistakable. Agree, it was a crackout that ngc smiled upon the second time.
@DoubleEagle it is the same dealer that you mention. I really liked one of his coins that was in an ms64 holder and would have paid strong ms64 money for it, but he said it was a proof and put a $20k price on it. Lol. Hard pass. I dont think it's still on the site, and I wonder where it ended up.

I would have guessed the dealer first try. Ridiculously overpriced details coin and unsubstantiated claims that a business strike coin is a proof? Easy.

Nobody should be shocked or surprised to learn that a previously "details" graded coin later ends up straight-graded. It happens far more often than one might believe if they have never participated in the crackout game.
Likewise, straight-graded coins can later go into details holders.
This is absolutely nothing new.

This sort of thing makes some people rich and gives the numismatic community a black eye.

Details coins go straight but not to 64 very often. Even across the street. Disappointing and undeserving.
