    Bird of Prey from Today

(Alaska Range including Mount Spurr Volcano on the horizon)

I never knew a Magpie could look so regal. The one pictured from today is a Black-Billed Magpie or sometimes known as the American Magpie.

Apparently they are among the most intelligent of animals capable of even making tools.

    From all knowing Wikipedia:

"Magpies have shown the ability to make and use tools, imitate human speech, grieve, play games, and work in teams.[4] They are particularly well known for their songs and were once popular as cagebirds."

To complement the Bird of Prey, here is a video of a Mechanical Bird that I also captured today in the Alaska skies.

    Birds of a Feather

    These Belong Together

(The first from April 8, the second from yesterday - both with Volcano Mount Spurr as a backdrop.)

My screenshot photo from last month when Mount Spurr Volcano was most active with a visible plume coming out of its Crater Peak. The distance from where I took the photo in Anchorage and the Volcano is approximately 80 miles.

    YESTERDAY

IN THE LINKED VIDEO BELOW, An Air Force Fighter Jet descends over Volcano Mount Spurr and the Alaska Range fronted by the waters of Anchorage Alaska’s Cook Inlet.

Then majestic Mt Susitna comes into view followed by a moored Cook Inlet Tug Boat which is followed by a landing USAF transport plane and a click clacking Alaska Railroad Train and locomotive.

The view then returns to Mount Susitna and Mt Spurr Volcano as it continues under an eruption alert issued by the Alaska Volcano Observatory at Code Yellow.

This week is National Police Week and May 15th was Peace Officers Memorial Day.

In Honor of the Law Enforcement Officers who died in the line of duty, flags at State Buildings in Alaska were lowered to half-mast under the direction of our Governor to pay tribute to the 72 who have given their lives in Alaska. Nationally there are 24,000 honored on "the wall" in Washington, D.C.

The most recent law officer fatality in Alaska was at the end of December of 2022 when an officer in Nome was killed by a Musk Ox while trying to protect a kennel of sled dogs from a group of Musk Ox.

Linked here is a video of Anchorage Police Officers risking their lives to protect the citizens:

First there was screaming and yelling. Then multiple police vehicles arrived to secure the area, This was followed by a suspect raising his hands as police approached to cuff him and place him in one of the police vehicles.

As seen in this video all of the doors of the suspect’s vehicle were left flung open after a search had been completed.

The video also captures the flashing lights of the police vehicles remaining ablaze.

That is on I70, westbound, on the steep decline from the west end of the Eisenhower Tunnel.
To get that high up the ramp the truck must have been going EXTREMELY fast.
