3 Cent Nickel ~ NEWP! 1866 3CN

It’s been very challenging for me to find one of these that is “nice enough“
Lots of them are kind of meh
This one has a cool backstory, a couple of months ago, a couple came into the shop that I work at with a box of coins that they inherited.
The guy that owned the coins died in 1981 and everything had been in this box ever since! Pretty much untouched…
Very exciting to go through this stuff, we bought the whole box and in there was an old type set style book, kind of like Dansko, but an earlier version, lots of really neat plexiglass type holders, no doubt this stuff was from the 60’s and 70’s…
Lots of this stuff was pretty nice, but nothing over the top, except this one…
I saw this one and had to have it! So we sent the group to PCGS and it arrived last week sometime, I purchased this one yesterday…
Honest opinions… What do you guys think?
I really like the toning on it!
The TrueView is decent on this one…

Nice! Love the heavy die clash.
Nothing is as expensive as free money.
Great clash—I really like the way it frames Liberty’s face.
Yes, the clash mark really adds to the eye appeal! Cool coin!

I really like the color. This was my 18th birthday present to myself… I wanted one with some clashing:
Love the look - the luster, the color and the noticeable clashing - and you're right the TV looks pretty decent.
“We are only their care-takers,” he posed, “if we take good care of them, then centuries from now they may still be here … ”

Great eye appeal - one of the better 3CN I've seen.
"When they can't find anything wrong with you, they create it!"
That’s awesome! And a great looking example! It almost looks like it’s got more clashing than mine even…
Is it graded?

Wow... that's got to be the Mother of all Clashes.

It's an NGC MS65. I'd have to look closely to remember which is which, but it's got 5 clashes on one side (the portrait clashes on the reverse, if I recall) and 4 on the other.
great looking coin
I was not aware of this, but the majority of that collection was still intact in that original box, or at least the box that the people brought it in, and only the better type coins that were in that set that were sent to PCGS were removed and a few from other books, but the rest was all there. I took some quick pictures for everybody’s enjoyment:
I was positive that this stuff had been sold off, but no, it’s all still there!
He is going to let me have that original library of coins book sometime next week, I’m just going to put it with my miscellaneous coin books… I doubt I’ll ever put coins back into it but I think it’s really neat to have!
