I was looking for a 1945 peso on eBay and found a really nice coin. When I looked at the certificate this came up:

I notified the seller (BTW I am NOT implying the seller did anything wrong) and decided not to pursue this coin. Some of my coins buddies disagreed. What do you think? What do @Numismaticcrimeinfo thinks about this?

    If the item is in NCIC as reported stolen, then it needs to be surrendered or seized by l/e. IMO

    If it was my coin that was stolen then I would hope someone would report it to the proper authorities and just not bid on it. Just my opinion, no judgements.

    I wonder how much proof NGC needs to adjust the status - "reported" - maybe I'll start reporting coins I like in auctions so you guys don't bid against me

    I am not trying to criticize the OP's decision, but that's not how I woukd have handled it.

    NGC was doing its best to alert others to the stolen coin and that information might have been used to alert authorities so that the coin could be retrieved and perhaps those responsible for the theft apprehended.

    By alerting the seller that you know it was stolen, it is very likely that it won't be recovered. The seller may have been the theif, or the thief's fence, or an innocent purchaser. But now they know it's on the record as stolen so they'll probably crack it out or find another more discrete way to sell it.

    I'd still alert NGC and NCIC now. They might still be able to act.

    @JBK thank you for giving your opinion. The coin still active as of 42 seconds ago, not sure anyone did anything despite the reporting.

    Already June. The coin still is up. While NGC contacted me, it looks as if they did nothing...
