Need Input on these Iconic Cards...

I am looking to add a Lou Gehrig from the 1930s to my personal collection...part of downsizing my collection in order to have a few iconic cards in my collection. When finished...I will have a 1933 Goudey Ruth (shipped this week), 1933/34 Goudey Gehrig,1948 Leaf Jackie Robinson RC, 1949 Bowman Satchell Paige RC, 1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle RC (almost paid thru consignment), and a 1951 Bowman Willie Mays RC. Using consignments to fund these iconic cards...my collection will drop from 141 cards at its peak to somewhere in the 60s...but I will be happy to have a few iconic cards to go along with cards from the 50s and 60s HOFs.

Here are the Gehrig cards. Let me know which Gehrig image you like...without regard for grade. I am torn on which I like best.

    I like the 1933 the best. I don't know exactly why, maybe it just looks more pure than the others which have "Lou Gehrig Says". The 1934 4.5 would be a close 2nd as it is a great looking card.

    I always liked the 34 Goudey (yellow). I just liked how it says "Lou Gehrig Says" with him as the person on the card.

    I agree. It’s a year older, “action” shot and the blue is better looking, IMO. It also matches the colors of his college…i.e., “Columbia Lou.”

    I appreciate the earlier 1933 because it is more of a rookie. But I also just like the image more. Think the design on 1933 Goudey with the red Big League Chewing Gum banner is a really nice look. Not a huge fan of the "Lou Gehrig Says."

    Doing a similar consolidation, decreasing quantity while trying to improve quality. Your quality bar is a little higher than mine. 😄 But if I were going to only have a small amount of cards the 1933 Goudey Gehrig would be on the short list.

    1933 without a doubt in my opinion. Before I sold my entire collection in the late 90's - as I was recently married with little kids - this was the last card I sold. It was not graded and most likely would have received a 5 or 6 as that's what three major dealers told me during that time.

    I got $1,200 for the card which was a good price at that time.

    I like the design of the 33 the best but would go with the 1934 - #61 purely from a centering point of view.

    The 1933 will have the most value but the 1934 #27 visually is iconic Gehrig and the one I would want in my collection the most.

    The only right answer is 1934 yellow as number one, 1934 aqua as number two, 1933 blue is number three.😉

    1933 Gehrig…it will look the best next to your 1933 Ruth. Second choice is the 1934 yellow….iconic card on lots of tin signs.

    1933 Gehrig...that batting stance is classic Gehrig, of course I like action shots better than portraits.

    1933 classic set and nicely centered. Slight dirty edge left side. My choice.
    1934 #61 has a very clean look. The yellow #37 is more attractive.

    I prefer the 1933. Always liked the '33 Goudey design and I like action shots.

    While the images on the '34 Goudeys are a bit crisper, I've never been a fan of the '34 design and the cartoon characters in the background. Card # 37 would be my seond choice - great image of him smiling. The painted image on card #61 seems "off" in terms of likeness.

    I agree about the cartoon characters in the diamond scene in the background…very distracting. It is a turn off for me as well. I have eliminated ‘34 Goudey #61. So…it’s down to the ‘33 and #37 in ‘34.

    Man, that's a Sophie's Choice for sure.

    I love a good portrait card as much as anyone, but those action shots from the 30s are so cool too.

    I say 'GET BOTH!' >:)

    I'd do the '33.

    Guess its the '33 Monte, because I'll step out an a limb here and assume the 34 is a little too off-center for your discerning tastes? Give me that 34 #61 every day of the week!

    It was quite likely created as the title of the film by its producer, Samuel Goldwyn. It was never associated as a moniker for Gehrig while he was alive, nor did Lou use it himself.
