Approximately how long did it take you to get that collection together?
Hi, than you, and very sorry for the late reply (too busy watching my savings melt away).
To answer your question, all of the coins I show took only a few years to find.
The Santiago coins are another story.
I had to wait about 20 years to find the right examples, and be able to afford them. I always wanted one of the Santiago Columnarios and longed for them for a long time. When the opportunity finally showed up, my wife made me swear to some kind of 'Numismatic Chastity' henceforth as a precondition for her approval....

Your 8 reales from Chile is amazing!!! I have one suggestion you need to do an acetone bath on that coin it has some greenish areas would be horrible if it affected the surface.
Buy 100% pure acetone from hardware store. Use glass dish with 100% glass lid or aluminum foil to cover the dish. Do each side 1-2 times with fresh acetone. I would store the coin in a better holder that is for sure PVC free.
If you leave as is it may get worse and become a serious problem.

I own 5 early milled Guatemala 1 reales all are holed. I owned one with no hole but sold it to a forum member here.
And they want to sell it to me??? 😂
What dates? You should post pics.
You already purchased it SimonW it was the 1764 not holed. My other 5 coins have holes but they are part of my long term collection.
Bro, you’ve GOT to stop changing names. 🤣
Hahaha!!! It is my US dime collecting mood name. I will keep it for a long while hopefully for years or more this time around.
Now where have I heard that before?! 🤔😂
Thing is after my 1 reales I do not see myself doing 1/2, 2, 4 or 8 reales. I am getting closer and closer to my goals with 1 reales (still a while to go...but at this point I may only be able to add a few coins per year) but I truly enjoy the US dimes and they will be my long term life goal. I will not sell my Latin American 1 reales collection I will upgrade some over time. I am just at a point were adding any new 1 reales is getting harder and harder and I need to collecting something that I know I can buy any day of the week (US dimes).
It takes it toll collecting Latin American coins the daily searching and every time a coin comes up I need I must buy it (or I may not find another for years or more). With US dimes if I miss a coin it does not matter another will show up for sale fast enough.
I enjoy the 1 reales very much but I need something easier to collect long term and I can afford to collect US dimes in lower grades (for the most part).
I always was passionate about the jungle/South America, wild west (cowboys & Indians) and so these 2 series are perfect for me.
1/2 reales are to small
2 reales are to rare
4 reals are to rare and expensive
8 reales are all expensive (Mexico is easy not counting the high price for a milled 1732) these days most would cost 800$-1000$ Canadian per coin
I have thought this threw and this is the best for me and my budget long term. If I was richer I may have done the 8 reales but I am not. Over 90% of the US dimes are affordable to me and some I will have to save up years to acquire (some I may never own).

I apologize guys. I promise this will be my user name for a long long time (I doubt it will ever be changed again). It matches what I will be collecting for the decades to come (mostly + 1 reales).

That slab for the 1760 So J 1/2R is strange; is the coin loose in the vacuity, or is there a ring of clear plastic surrounding the coin? I assume the former since in the photo the coin is off center?
I also agree with the other comments: that 8R belongs in a slab, for the sake of your investment in a fantastic coin. Thank you for sharing both here.
@SimonW said: @Eddi I don’t see any PVC at all, for the record, but I’d send that baby in to PCGS! What a beautiful coin!
Beside the 1-6-4 (date areas) and S/O and in that area there is green.
I mean it is not hard or long to do an acetone bath and it is cheap as well. It will not harm your coin in any way either.
The 1760 1/2 real is OK I see no PVC.
Your 8 reales is a very expensive coin why risk it if it is PVC.
If not PVC what is the greenish areas?
Looks like copper verdigris to me, pretty normal for copper bearing silver, probably an environmental thing anyway, not from the coin itself.
Regarding the holder, I believe there was a pedigree added/changed and they reholdered it. I remember the auction, the ringless holder is the one in the auction. The holder in the pic was when it hit the auction block a few years before, recently, where I assume Eddi bought it (Aureo or Taler, can’t remember which) it was ringless.
@The_American_Frontier I have had acetone create problems for me, it’s not supposed to, but it did. It ate away at something on one of my Guatemala 4R coins. I cracked it out, acetone dipped it, because I thought it deserved a higher grade. Was going to resubmit to PCGS. After a couple days it ate away at a spot on the coin. I’m not sure if the coin had been doctored or if it was a weakness in the silver (we are talking about Guatemala and really poor coin making practices.) in the end, my 1769 4R that I thought was a little undergraded (that I spent a premium on purchasing) ended up being environmentally damaged.
I’m buried in that coin for years, because I used acetone.
This isn’t the norm, but I wouldn’t go around dipping every coin just for fun, there’s always risk.

That is truly some bad luck!!! Never happened to me or heard of that before hence why I suggested to use acetone. I guess it can happen but I imagine it is very rare.

I have selection 8 reales from Guatemala, Potosi and Lima. This one happens to be out the safe deposit box to be photographed for a presentation I am thinking of doing at our local coin club.
Potosi 1769 fancy 9 variety. (having trouble uploading the images, any guidance from someone?)

My Guatemala type set. I have examples of other dates, these are the current highest grades in each denomination.

if i go and check that cert number for the 1760 1/2R in there have this images;

I looked it up too, thus the question. Wondering if the original pictured slab was an error on the TPG's part and the pics above are of the later fix.

Thank you!
(I can't tell you how many hours of pleading with my wife those two cost me....)
Acetone is an organic solvent and there's 0% chance it will react with silver or copper.
8 Reales Madness Collection
Yeah, for sure, I get it. Still though…something happened.
One consideration is that the silver held other impurities, but my main assumption is that someone doctored it with putty it or something.
I’ll post pics when I can.
