Ovie played against superior goaltending and defense. If he played during the 80s he could have scored 100+ goals in a season. Look at the highest goal scoring seasons in NHL history, the 2000s only factor twice in the top 25 while Gretzky's era has 19 of the top 25. It was indisputably easier to score while Gretzky was playing.

I think Gretzky is the greatest hockey player of all time but Ovie is the the greatest scorer.

No one said Ovechkin is the GOAT now he simply has the goal record.

The statement was "greatest goal scorer" ............he's NOT.

He does have the most goals.

Both guys were decimated by injury but Mike Bossy and Mario Lemieux were probably the greatest goal scorers ever. Both averaged 62 goals per 82 games, with Bossy finishing with a career 21.2% shooting percentage and Mario at 19.0. Mario - and Ovi - indisputably played at least part of their careers in eras that were far more difficult to score in than Gretzky or Bossy, however.

Bonds has both the single season and all time home run records, but Mcgwire has both the all time best AB/HR ratio and PA/HR ratio's
