Not great pics; at first I thought this was a fake, the owner said that a local early coin expert saw it as real, he was asking $1700.

    I certainly agree that the pics aren’t great! And from what I can see, the coin looks genuine.

    Based on the limited photos the asking price seems fair. That opinion excludes unseen problems.
    How cool if it was a thirteen star reverse?

    Hard to tell from those photos, wouldn’t want to guarantee the authenticity or try to grade.
    I can see that it is the 16 star variety and it looks like the stem of the 7 is showing below the 8.

    This coin should be stored in a kraft paper envelope in a warm place to give it some natural toning. It would still be cleaned but at least the appearance would be improved.

    I wasn't sure the coin was real, first look it looked fake to me, "chromed over", which was probably the cleaning. I'll try to update with pics.; am thinking VF details.

    The point of focus is below the coin. Are these seller photos? Exceptionally bad photos for a potentially valuable coin.

    I’m guessing there were circumstances preventing the OP from getting better photos at the time. I still appreciate the effort to post a genuinely interesting (to me anyway) coin that’s rarely seen on the forum.

    My apology on the pics.; I sent the young dealer a request for a picture yesterday but go no response. He said something about not checking his emails. If he still has it next week I may make him an offer. For imagination purposes, my description would be a "chrome" like overall look due to the cleaning.

    As I posted elsewhere, I cane across a very deceptive counterfeit of a 1798 dime many years ago. Really bad pictures like this tell you nothing. I would not take risk based on pictures like this alone.

    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    Here's an MS-64 from PCGS CoinFacts for comparison.

    It looks like a fairly close match, although I'm not an expert in authenticating these.

    IMHO I would consider it genuine, but I'm no expert. The overdate looks legit when compared to the MS-64 example.

    She's had a rough life, 227 years!, and been cleaned but still looks good to me. Could bring close to $2k once authenticated.

    Check out this NGC VF20 (w/plenty of patina remaining) that sold on Heritage 16 months ago. ha.com/1798-97-10c-16-stars-reverse-vf20-ngc
