SS Republic Hardwood Display Case with special NGC slabbed medal ...

... picked one of these up today. These are the hardwood presentation cases that held/hold the SS Republic shipwreck recovery coins conserved and graded/slabbed by NGC. Really beautiful box that includes the DVD/booklet on the National Geographic special. However, for the pittance I paid, it obviously did not include a coin. Instead, this appears to be a National Geographic promotion ... there is a NGC-slabbed "Limited Edition Silver Medal" with a proof rendition of an 1861 Seated Liberty Half Dollar on obverse. The reverse has the National Geographic and PBS logos and the words: "Civil War Gold: The SS Republic Story, Wednesday, November 17 8 pm ET/PM"

The NGC slab features an insert printed over a rendering of the ship stating: "Commemorating the PBS Premiere of National Geographic's "Civil War Gold, Story of the SS Republic Shipwreck. (Obverse depicts 1861 Liberty Seated Half Dollar) Numismatic Guaranty Corporation."

The box and medal are very well done ... anyone run across one of these sets promoting the TV special? Strikes me as a nice numismatic-related item ...

Before you ask, I paid all of $10 for this. image The ultimate in sample slabs?

  • Where in the world did you get it at, and are more available?
  • I have three (3) S.S. Republic Presentation boxes. 2 are for a single slab (with DVD) and a "leather Like" sleeve for bookshelf placement. A 3rd is for 3-slabbed coins (No DVD,No Sleeve). Email texasgoldman @ gmail . com for more info.

As far as the boxes, Ebay may be a good place to sell or at least check if there is a value.
