I submitted a 1823 bust half for variety attribution as an ugly three

Not sure why PCGS did not grade this as an O 101a
I also humbly believe this is a better grade than MS61. I welcome any comments and or opinions.
Thanks

    "Ugly 3"
    "Better than MS61"

No where else on the planet right now are these words being spoken.

  • It’s got amazing eye appeal, and I wish I would’ve thought of taking a picture of the reverse before I sent it back to PCGS !
    Thanks Braddick

Really nice coin! Looks like a 58+ to me that got a courtesy upgrade to 61.

EDIT: (Guessing) likely reason for not mentioning the Ugly 3 is that Variety Attribution was not selected on the submission.

  • Thanks, I incorrectly identified the Overton number it is 110a
And yes, I believe you’re correct. I purchased it a while ago and I’m sure the guy did not ask for a variety, not sure why you wouldn’t due to the huge difference in value.
    Thanks again

Here is my best guess at it:
The Overton appears to be O-106. The 3 has the look of the O-106a. However, I don't see the thin die crack noted in Overton book through stars 11, 12, 13 to curl for the 'a'. The Die Progress booklet notes a 106.2 with a Tampered 3 and then 106.3 with the additional die crack. So Overton notes O-106a with a Tampered 3 and die cracks. Since it has the Tampered 3 look but apparently no die cracks (unless can be seen in hand), then it is a O-106 but a 106.2 with the Tampered 3.

One of the true Overton gurus can possibly confirm or blow up my thinking. :)

  • Thank you for the amazingly thorough response but I’m a tad bit confused as I have no references for an O 106 ?
In Laymans terms, how is it described?
Could you possibly provide me a picture of a O 106
Thank you very much. I really appreciate your input and look forward to hearing from anyone else that has an opinion or thought on this Coin and it’s variety.

    O-101a is the Broken 3
    O-110a is the Ugly 3

Your coin is an O-106 which is the Tampered 3. Here is the Maibockaddict site for the O-106 attribution: http://maibockaddict.com/1823-o-106a-r2-capped-bust-half-dollar.shtml

  • After visiting the site and reading up on it, I could not agree more !
I believe it is an O 106 but it sure is ugly lol
Any pricing for these varieties I didn’t see anything linked to the 10 year sales reference, I guess I can just do some searching
I really appreciate your assistance and it’s been educational 👍
