Slab collectors how rare are these? David Hall investment group graded Dime on Ebay

I think the dimes are the most common of these, I picked this one up about 20 years ago. Not sure what it’s worth or what I paid, but I left the $130 price tag on it so I think I got it for a bit less than that back then.

I've seen a few of these for sale over the past year on some of the FB sites. I mostly see Morgans and Mercs, I have two common date 81-S Morgans in my collection. All the coins that I have seen in these flips have looked nice for the grade.

Like many sub-areas of numismatics, these have their own history, nuances, market, and following. In general, they command a 2x-5x premium, depending on the series, date, and condition. 98% of the known examples are graded either MS65 or PR65.
Franklin halves are by far the most common series. The Buffalon 38-D is the most common coin.The coin in the OP is in a Gen3 holder and sold quickly at 3x PCGS Price Guide (2x MS66 Price Guide). Here's the link to a guide on David Hall flips.

I was wondering , thanks for the replies. Yes I see the Kointains now, little circular capsules that encompass the entire coin before its sealed in the flip. Good deal

I was the buyer on that coin, I know I paid a premium but I will buy what I have never seen before because they can't be common. In 10 years I will get my money back. Plus the coin is super PQ for a 65. I will be interested to see if CAC will sticker it. Given that JA founded NGC and his main competitor was David with PCGS I bet they won't. FWIW, in the late 80’s, after the slabs had launched, I was at a Central States show and I tried to sell a Morgan in one of these sealed flips to Mr. Hall himself and he told me that those grades were no longer in effect.

I wonder how safe these holders are for long term coin storage. The coins are in capsules which helps but these capsules are not airtight and PVC out gases fumes. Since the PVC flips are sealed, the out-gassing fumes can't escape and will build up inside the sealed flip.

I've owned a number of these holders over the years. Every coin was blast white and stayed blast white since the early '80's. This suggests that the cointain inside is protecting the coin from any PVC in the outer flip. I wouldn't worry about the PVC damaging the coin inside.
The blue holders aren't rare, but not common either. The older yellow flips are much harder to find. Here is one I used to own.

It's my poor description. The inserts are beige in color - not yellow. I sold mine several years ago for a handsome profit. Here is the only photo I have of it.

Have not seen one of these in a long time.
It’s an interesting piece of history but something would have removed from flip submitted to TPG for slabbing decades ago.
