The jar theory.
Think of the jar like this, it's an easy , on the spot, way to save an interesting looking coin. You think to yourself, I'll get to sooner or later, but, most likely, this will never happen.
Unless, a motivated 3rd party, follows up on what could have been, a logical error, in collecting coins.

More an amazing find but not quite there. Perhaps only a surprising find.
They are nice to find, but they are rarely worth anything. I've found a 1953 S Lincoln in MS 65 RD which wouldn't be worth grading. Ditto re a 1907 D Barber Dime that looked like a shark tried to bite it, and a 1929 S Lincoln in XF. Also found a 1921 50 Centavo Mexican coin in VF.
When I was a child, finding a 95 year old coin would actually be worth a few dollars, but not now.

On Saturday I took my daughter who is in college back to her university, but stopped at Costco for all her food and supplies. I pulled my card out and remembered I had cash so I paid cash and got these in my change:
A 1943-P war nickel and a star note $10.
First silver I'd gotten in change in a few years.
I get the occasional piece of silver in change at my store. More war nickels than anything, but the occasional dime or quarter also. Star notes are a regular thing too.
It never occurs to me to check my bills for star notes so I'll have to start doing that just for the heck of it. What kind of premium does a reasonably crisp star note carry?
Don't give up. There's still plenty of good stuff to find. When you can take your change and turn it into a few dollars I would say thats a win. I will say that it's not for everyone. You don't have to do it full time to use your knowledge to an advantage. I always check my change
I just found this 1943-S in a Coinstar when I went for a walk at lunchtime today inside a Stater Brothers Grocery Store. I am thinking of putting all of my Coinstar finds into a Wayte Raymond album.
For the really dirty ones, especially ones with what looks like tar on them, I’m planning on sending those through the washing machine and dryer along with some clothes before placing them in the album.
I also just recently cleaned out all the coins found inside my dryer (some cool fake errors) as well as ones that I found underneath my clothes dryer as well as underneath the washing machine and (after running the ones I found underneath through a wash /dry cycle along with some clothes and putting them into another Wayte Raymond album). Then I plan on going through one of my change jars and picking out some nice uncirculated ones and putting them in a couple of Wayte Raymond albums. I’m also thinking of adding some choice “road rash” fake errors that I find in the street in front of the convenience store a block from where I live. So many people throw out their cents into the street on the way out of the store. I’m thinking the fake errors “dryer” coins along with some fake error “road rash” coins might make an impressive display in an album.
I like these coins, cheap fun, and the albums full of these cheap and/or modern coins will make great decoys if i ever get burglarized if left in plain sight. If I don’t get burglarized then, who knows, maybe in 20 years or so I’ll have some nice modern coin toners. I’ve been using a powdered peroxide laundry additive to get my clothes to look brighter and I noticed that any coins accidently left in my pockets are coming out looking spotless, so I figure the peroxide is stripping off the coins skin so should make some wild colors in the old albums. And it’s a good way to make use of some of the poorer condition Wayte Raymond Binders and pages I ended up with over the years. Good cheap fun

I rarely check the print runs or anything. Sometimes I do usually not rare. Always look for radar, birthday, low serial numbers
I never use cash, so no change.
I too found a silver war nickel recently. However I completely gave up on finding a W quarter several years ago. James
Here's some of my change finds. Cheap fun can also net a small profit. Don't expect to get rich quick. Above all I'm having a ton of fun and hope you do too. Amazing hobby for us all to enjoy however you see fit
Got out of the habit around 1965. Rarely use cash today. Enjoyed it back in the day.

Nobody is being taken for their $. I had a buyer contact me after the sale saying their coin graded ms 67. A $1000 coin at the time. I should have sent them in myself. It is what it is. I'm content with whatever. Don't give up the hunt
I still use cash, just never was very into credit cards and such.

You can check star notes online. Most are not rare, but if you find one with a lot of zeros starting the serial number you may have something. This one is not bad.
No change in my pockets. I raid my wife's wallet once a month or so. I pulled this out awhile ago.
I'll never find anything since I stopped using cash almost 20 years ago

Still check my change. Old habits die hard. And when I come across a wheatie or silver it takes me back in time to when they were more plentiful. And was able to add to the Whitman folders. Also never know when an error coin may appear.
None, for the vast majority. Needs to be very low (3 digits or less) or have something else going for it.
I scan every bill I get for “fancy numbers”. Somewhere out there is a $20 with 88888888 for a serial number. That’s a ten grand find… I’d love to find a $100 star note 00000100….
