PCGS Coin restoration Question

Quick question regarding the restoration pcgs offers. I have a slabbed key date coin with a unc details questionable color, would this be something that is eligible to be sent in? I’m not sure whether to just crack it out and dip it or send it in to be done professionally? Although from what I’m told they do the same thing.

The coin:

    That’s a tough one.
I don’t think it’s AT, but rather had been cleaned previously there retoned a little funky. Also looks like it might have PVC residue.

My guess is that if you “do it yourself “, then resubmit, it will come back Details- cleaned.
If you send it for conservation, at least you should have a guarantee it will straight grade.

My most recent experience was along those same lines, though the coin in question was already straight graded, but I hoped an improvement in the eye appeal could bring it up from AU 55 to 58. It was kind of a moot point, as it cost me $85, they didn’t touch it, and gave no explanation. But on the bright side, I still have a valuable coin in a straight grade holder.

Should've attached these to, def AT. Not sure if I should just dip it

PCGS has a superb conservation team. Possibly Anacs, etc. might straight grade it as is or conserve it cheaper though it would be worth less than say a PCGS MS63.

Oh yeah, seeing the new images with the neon
colors makes me also believe AT.

That is one poor TrueView image, but your images make the coin appear likely to be AT, so they help a lot. You have been given one piece of not-so-correct advice and that is the following quote-

"If you send it for conservation, at least you should have a guarantee it will straight grade."

This is not necessarily true. PCGS might or might not conserve the coin, but if they do conserve it then it won't automatically straight grade. In other words, it could still come back in a details holder.

My opinion is that there is little upside in buying relatively common coins (the 1932-S in MS is a common coin) in genuine holders and then hoping for a miracle in the restoration process.

This isn't advice, but if it was mine I would crack it and dip it myself.

The light purple hue on your coin screams AT. I don't think a dip will help. A dip will help if removes crud on the surface of the coin and doesn't eat into the coin itself.
