My Collection of Old Holders
Never a slave to one plastic brand will I ever be.
Very cool. I don't think I've gotten anything old lately.
Collector, occasional seller
When I was a "young numismatist" in the 1960's, coins that were 80 years old would have been from the 1888's. You could go to the bank and get silver dollars at face value that were dated in the 1880's, but it was virtually impossible to find them in circulation.
It shows how times, and mintages have changed. In the 1880s, Indian cent mintages ranged from 11 to almost 50 million. In 1946, the Philadelphia Mint issued almost 1 billion cents, 991,655,000 to be exact.
Another factor is how often a cent changed hands in a year. The cent was used heavily in the 1880's. Today you can see pictures of full trash cans of cents on this site. I dare say most of those coins have been been spent in many years.
