  • Gerry - Your approach to this question was right on the money and extremely well written. I choose not to list the details of my set as I need a few remaining coins and feel I would be taken advantage of. I see it happen all the time. Too much money at stake in my series. But I also noticed that not to many sets are closed in other series. As a percentage of the top 5 sets, I don't even know where the pressure for this question is coming from. Perhaps Braddick and others could save me some time and point out which sets are "hot" but closed. Thanks.

I believe that PCGS requires all recognized top sets, those with the "*2002" designation, and those in the Hall of Fame to be open.
  • Gerry,

ditto... I have one of my 15 sets closed for the same reason. Price gouging Take example. I called a dealer and asked a price for a coin he offered and he stated your upgrading your set and then throws
price. I call a dealer I have never dealt with for the same coin and he charges me 400.00 less for the coin. I will always take the heat for not opening it but oh well. I'm out for the best set!! Not the most expensive one.

Should have said no, it's not for my set. image

That's the advantage to being a Type collector. If I have the money to spend and I don't like the price quoted on a Seated Quarter, I can buy a Seated Half from another dealer. image

PCGS did not require this for the 2002 awards, as High Desert won several Best of Registry certificates in the Type set category and was named one of the Top 5 Classic Sets for his Complete Type set. His sets are closed to public viewing.

Keith. I see that there are some top sets that are closed.
This is interesting, as, when I was awarded the *2002 honor(s), BJ called me to tell me that
I had to open my closed top sets to be recognized. I may have incorrectly assumed that this rule was to applied to all top sets. image
  • BJ called me to tell me that I had to open my closed top sets to be recognized.

My guess is that the set had to be open for viewing for the Hall of Fame honor.

I would open my set for viewing, but I don't have enough self control to say "no" to a dealer that tries to jack up the price on a coin I need.

I have no spine to say "no" and tell the dealer to stick it in his case for a year until it sells and that I won't ever buy from him again.

I am a slave to a dealers whim and I have to obey because if I don't I may end up enjoying collecting coins and not get caught up in buying plastic so I can get an ego boost.
  • Greg I can firmly say your collecting habits of late have become questionable, and frankly, farked.

    carry on..

    Right.
I would think we all control our hobby destiny.

I've never, not once, had a Dealer call me at home and try to jack me on a coin I needed/wanted for anything.
The few that have offered coins to me have priced them fairly, honest descriptions and I've either played or passed.

In all honesty- I've read where it could be bothersome, the soliciting of coins for your set(s), but does it really happen or is it just a fear that it might?

Come on guys. Lets have some fun. Open up your Registries! image
  • Braddick - did you read my post? Could you please answer the question? This is your thread so I would think you of all people would take a shot at answering. If you and any others won't take a shot at identifying which sets you want to see, then I respectfully request that all the whiners erace their comments and you delete your post. Common, I dare you to name the sets you all want to see. Maybe I can help if its a set I own.

Sorry I missed it the first time.
I'd love to see EACH AND EVERY SET (Yes- that's all twelve of them!) RegistryCoin has blocked!! imageimage

Then, and only then- I'd love to see the top sets in the Type Set catagory, for example. Looks like THREE of the FIVE are Blocked!

I havent read the posts on this thread.. so my thoughts are not persuaded. I personally, do not open my sets. Whats the point of opening the sets if you cant post a picture? 99% of the people who have registry sets, dont have pictures. So what do I want to know.. that someone else has an MS66 or MS67 in their set? So, big deal.

If you cant actually see the set.. do I want to see a bunch of numbers on a page? No thanks!!
HAVE A GREAT DAY! THE CHOICE IS YOURS!!!!

Me? I think all my sets have been open for well over a year, except one, the #1 Roosie set, and I can't change that one if it isn't "current". Let me know if there are other closed ones. I don't think there are.
    Click "registrants other sets"
ps. I think it's sixteen. (Used to be 18 or 19, I think) It seems that my old state quarter sets have been "dismissed". image

    Cool.

    Next step: PHOTOS!!*

Steve, I love your idea behind having PCGS image the coins while they're being encapsulated. It would be a great service to their clients and we collectors would be happy.

*And I promise: NO "Photograph the Registeries, once and for all" Threads two years from now.

Oh, and Steve- I think I know where I can locate a 1934 DD Washington for you... but it won't be cheap!

  • Braddick - thanks for the answer. I would like to see the high desert collection(s) as well. But is this the only series all this hype has been stirred up over?????????????

Thanks. I've tried to come up with a way to image the coins, although, I wish they could have been imaged when at pcgs.
Pat. You are welcome to start an "Image, or else" thread, anytime. If imaging were to be required, I'd probably find some help.
ps. I am just interested in a few commems. Thanks anyway!
