1909 s vdb..... is it genuine

in U.S. Coin Forum

This is in a set I'm appraising and I'm a little on the fence about it.

It looks like mintmark position #3 and the serifs are parallel. It's worn so hard to see the die chip. It does have a scratch going thought the mintmark. As for the VDB it looks ok. It's worn on the rim but it looks ok to me. What's your opinion?

    In hand, how does the top serif look? It's hard to see it well in the pictures.

    The top serif looks ok to me has a little gunk but looks normal to me

    At this point, I don't see anything that tells me the coin's bad. But if you didn't already do so, I'd recommend checking the area around the mintmark to try to be sure it hasn't been added.

    My guess is that it’s genuine, but you will still have to get it certified in a “details” holder to sell it. The price paid will have to reflect that.

    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    Looks genuine to me, but the scratch through the "S" sort of makes it difficult to verify...You wonder why it has a scratch at exactly at that point if not to cover up the fact that the mint mark was added, but on the other hand, you wonder why a counterfeiter would be so obvious...Send it off, it will ensure the value for the future.

    It's an appraisal so tell the person it's best to get it certified.
    Odds are
    Unless someone forgot to flatten the staples on a cardboard holder and it just happened to scratch this high dollar coin right there of all places...you see where I'm going with this :o
    Better chance of an added mint mark and someone scratched it intentionally.

    It does appear to be genuine and it could be used as a hole filler to complete a coin album by a collector who is on a very limited coin budget. The location of that scratch is unfortunate, but it does appear to be just a random scratch.

    It appears to have one of 4 mm positions and the “shallow N” in UNITED so it looks genuine to me.
