  Yep. Democrat Grover Cleveland was elected president in 1885 and the Carson City mint superintendent James Crawford (who had the ear of big politicians) died the day before the presidential inauguration. Cleveland fired all the Republicans at the Carson City mint and closed it down.

  Republican Benjamin Harrison was elected in 1888 and reopened the mint. Grover Cleveland won a second term in 1892 and closed it down again, this time for good.

  It would be nice to see the US Mint reopen the Carson City mint. I think it would be a more popular mint to mint bullion coins than West Point.
