Yep. Democrat Grover Cleveland was elected president in 1885 and the Carson City mint superintendent James Crawford (who had the ear of big politicians) died the day before the presidential inauguration. Cleveland fired all the Republicans at the Carson City mint and closed it down.

It would be nice to see the US Mint reopen the Carson City mint. I think it would be a more popular mint to mint bullion coins than West Point.
