FUN Show 2025 - Not Really a Show Report

lilolmelilolme Posts: 2,780 ✭✭✭✭✭

So this is not really a show report but thought I would throw out some stuff from the show. This is not in any order.

In discussions it was understood that PCGS will probably release their Member Only show schedule in the next couple weeks. Hopefully no hiccups but they have many things to consider and coordinate with these show schedules. Also with todays technologies it apparently gives the opportunity to do things for security on the slabs that were not practical before. So sometime this year there could be a new pcgs slab coming out with more and improved features to help prevent counterfeit slabs.

On Saturday, around 11 AM as I recall, a dealer friend came over to my friend table saying they had shut the show down for about 10 minutes. By that he meant or said they didn't let anyone in or out and apparently looking for someone. I asked if it was a missing coin but got the don't know. He said dealer X had a photo of a person (maybe for a table camera) and apparently that was who they were looking for. Otherwise all seemed normal to me and never heard anymore on it.

FUN had a new dealer day on Tuesday. After I arrived late in the afternoon I was walking over to just look in and see what it was like (no dealer day action by me). A friend said (jokingly) don't go inside or it will cost you $100. So this dealer day was set up differently. They had tables but they were not assigned to anyone. Get there and sit down at an open table and do business. But all who came in paid $100. Those getting there early could occupy a table all day I guess at $100 per person. Normally the table holder dealers pay the room fee and the others are free to come in and do business. Some indicated this would be better on Wednesday morning to early afternoon just before FUN opens. Will see if this sticks around next year.

So FUN has a table occupancy rule until 3 PM Saturday. If you leave before that then could get moved to another (probably not as good) table the next year. This did happen to a few dealers I am aware of this year. Will see how strict this will be going forward.

When I went by the PCGS table they generally seemed busy and a couple times had a double line of people waiting. Does not seem to be slowing down for them despite some complaints I read. The limited amount of on site grading results I heard about were that pcgs was 'tight' again. Also once again I heard of some NGC CAC slabs that DNC (did not cross) and then were sent to CAC grading for crossover as a CAC sticker almost guarantees the crossover.

HA had an onsite auction of part of the Col Steven Ellsworth collection the Large Cents. I wanted to check to see how many people were actually in the room but it would take a half hour to walk over check for a few and walk back so I didn't. However, I don't recall anyone mentioning the on site auction. Did anyone go? Have any information on attendance? I am not sure but don't think the on site auction is a big draw of people and particularly think few would be attending FUN just to go to the auction. But...???

Speaking of auction I got in on Tuesday to Heritage lot view but 90% of what I wanted to view was not on location yet. Told to check back Wednesday morning. I did that and was told that the lots were 'in the air' on the way to FUN and check back in the afternoon. Wednesday afternoon is busy so I checked back Thursday AM and they had arrived. I went back and viewed a couple coins three more times by Saturday. Not to confident of winning anything though, but one never knows.

Had a good view of the convention center so I took a few photos to show the layout. For size in this first photo down the left side to the back side of the convention center (North hall) the steps were in the mid 500's (maybe 5 minutes). The FUN is held in the back right side of this convention building. It was around a 12 minute walk from outside the Rosen Center for me.

This is the walkway over to the Hyatt. The 'flat' area in front of the Hyatt is the Hyatt convention center (it is fairly good size).

This is the walkway from the Hyatt to the West convention building. The building (wall) on the far left is the Rosen Center.

I'd still call it a show report, or show "musings" ...either way, thanks for the interesting insights!

There was a brisk breeze on Thursday so the walk to the bourse from the Rosen Centre hotel was brrrr cold!

Nice report. This caught my eye... "Also once again I heard of some NGC CAC slabs that DNC (did not cross) and then were sent to CAC grading for crossover as a CAC sticker almost guarantees the crossover." Interesting, so that's what you try to get a DNC NGC coin into a CACed PCGS at same grade.

  • I had two NGC CAC coins that did not cross. I looked into the auction room. It was not packed, but a reasonable crowd. There were a lot more people than at the auctions held in Dallas.

Thanks for the input on the on-site auction. First I have heard on any information on it. Good that there was a decent crowd there so maybe HA will do another one (if consigner agrees I guess is part of it?). But I wonder how much that cost HA for the additional people, equipment, setup, room and transportation of....

And some more NGC CAC that DNC. Considering CAC grading for them?
