What does everyone think about this Arizona toned quarter? Is it market acceptable or questionable color (if you want to say AT or NT, feel free to do so)?

Depends on if it looks like the trueview in hand. The way it appears in the picture, seems very unnatural to me - but sometimes these pictures show a level of color the actual coin doesn't really have.

    AT.

However, I wouldn't be surprised to have PCGS straight grade it.

Obviously accelerated by exposure. The question of if it came by that exposure by accident or intentionally is a misnomer. The question is if it falls into the spectrum of acceptable looks that typical scenarios produce or there abouts. That said that example is too new and too atypical to be commonly accepted.

There is a subset that likes pretty and can imagine some wild happenstance that they think might have caused that by complete accident who will like it but I doubt the TPGs will.

One thing I look for is the layers of toning. Most old coins have layers of patina from exposure over time. Even if some are vivid there are other areas that have a different makeup. Even the vivid will be applied three dimensionally with areas exposed in different amounts or protected against. A good example of this is elevation chromatics.

If there is one layer almost liked it was painted on it was often a “rapid” process to put it kindly.

Does it have a pedigree to Wavy Gravy or Grace Slick? It sort of has that retro psychedelic look…

Kind of bothers me. It's really very good work. With some improvements this could be done to vintage coins.

Here is the rest of the story:
I picked this up raw on eBay a few months ago. I liked the look but figured it would go QC at PCGS. Maybe if I was lucky, it would straight grade. Since I didn’t have anything else to send with it, spending the grading fees did not seem worth it. I sold it raw. A few days ago I saw it pop up on Instagram. PCGS graded it as PR 68 DCAM. A big congrats to the person who bought it from me and got the grade!

My belief for quite a while is that PCGS really doesn't care all that much about the origin of toning on modern coins and this includes and might be especially so for ASEs and State quarters.

Whoever purchased this coin has the enjoyment of knowing that their specimen is unique, and one of the 34 lowest graded. I’d rather have this one than one of the thousands of “perfect” MS70 examples.

Amazing colors. I would like to know what storage container it was in or model of torch they used to get those colors.

I would say NT. I’m pretty sure it’s market acceptable.

From what I've seen in recent years this trend seems to be across all types as a whole, but moderns are hit especially hard as you mentioned.

Not surprised it was MA, as numerous ASEs that look like that get straight graded.

IMO this is a fine example of the silliness of pretending to be able to tell "artificial toning" from "natural toning" (whatever that is). I am not a fan of "toning" (artificial or otherwise), but I believe that pretending that there is a difference between the two types of alteration in a coin's appearance is working hard to find a distinction without a difference.

I believe it's done by anodizing or some type of electric process. I don't think any Sulphur or chemicals were used.

Maybe, but I remember watching YouTube videos where they used liver of sulfur in water and they hooked up a 9 volt battery and painted on rainbows, so could be both chemicals and electricity.

Two different issues, doctored vs getting a grade. People suspend logic when confronted with pretty. Coins are not the only case of this going off of the amount of alimony that trades hands in this country.
