An interesting result at GC for a common coin with an uncommon look

This might be among the craziest toned wheat cents and someone really liked it. Back in 2021 it brought over $2k. Tonight it went for less than half (but one can still argue this is strong money).

Perhaps a result of the COVID lockdown boredom along with extra government cash accounts for the difference?

I wonder too if it was in a CACG slab- of which is automatic with the sticker- if it would sell again for the closing price back in 2021.
    Pretty coin!

Does toning not degrade over time?

Perhaps sinply the fact that the seller wasn't bidding this time

That seems to be part of it. Last time there were two bidders above $1700, 3 above $1210 and 4 above the sale price tonight. I guess the other underbidders missed the auction or changed their minds. I thought this coin would go for more although I do not believe it is NT. If I thought it was, I would have been willing to pay more than it sold for this time (but not in 2021).

This type of toning is not at all uncommon for wheat cents in old carboard albums. I have quite a few myself. The difference is that mine are most likely not gem quality for the most part, and the combination of high grade + target toning seems to equal a lot of value.

It looks really AT to me. I wouldn’t have paid up for it.

Well it does have the CAC sticker, so they didn't think it was AT.

Mr. Albanese is not infallible. Maybe he passed it because he deemed it market acceptable.

I remember that coin back in 2021! I was going to put in what I considered a last minute nuclear bid, but it quickly surpassed that amount.

Here is the post I created back then:

I favor the reverse appearance over the obverse.

Agree the reverse is much nicer. Obverse is overdone and garish looking
