Okay so i was metal detecting and i found a large cent with a line down the center a line across the face and a small hole in the center any idea why?? to make smaller denominations or something? i looked online found a few with a hole none with lines though this coin is 1 of a kind for sure

I think its worth much less with the lines and hole but i think its unique so idc
throughout the ages coins have been abused. it reads like it's seen some extracurricular activity

Not much of a mystery, it’s been damaged. How or why doesn’t really matter,
in fact unless you were there at the time, you might never know how it got damaged

Nice find. I've dug many holed large. Appears the farmer needed dead center for something. They're out there. Good luck

i can't speak to the auction value, but as a find it's surfaces are in nice condition and as a find it will always be worth something
It a really cool find and the coin looks very nice coming out of the ground. The large cents I've seen out of the ground always look corroded to hell.

OUTSTANDING find! I have no idea about the lines or hole but coins were used as tools and games for years.

It was a tradition to nail a coin just inside the doorway when a new barn was built. It makes sense that the smallest denomination coin handy would be used. Not sure where you live and what may have been standing there maybe 50-100 or more years ago, but that could be one explanation for the hole.

Great find! Cant help you on the damage, but finding something like that in the ground is amazing. Can we see the other side?
I am a newer collector (started April 2020), and I primarily focus on U.S. Half Cents and Type Coins. Early copper is my favorite.
the side with the face is def nicer looking but look at that though you can still see united states of america and everything
@MsMorrisine the surfaces are in okay condition i cant speak to the auction value either haha but im curious how much would you pay for a coin like this like 40$? it says its worth like 78$ online but it has been hit with like a chisel and a mallet or something lol lemme know

I wouldn't pay anything for a coin like this because it would be worth more to the finder than it ever would to me.

I like it.... nice find! And yes... probably not worth very much because of the damage, but what a conversation piece!
The lines on the coin look like they were intended to insure the hole was cut dead center. The coin would then be attached to a handle and be used as a roller. Coins like this were often used when baking things like pies.
I would be jumping on detecting your entire lot after stumbling upon this, that is for certain. And I would be putting this in a plastic holder and displaying on your end table as celebration to what was discovered on your property
The pie crimper would have serrated edges. But likely used as a tool of some kind.
