Interesting (Good!) - DLRC Shipping Coins (Some??) Wrapped in Aluminum Foil

A short time ago, a couple of posts were made regarding an apparent uptick in the theft of coins stolen while in shipping transit. At least one person commented that it's possible that "smart" crooks are using devices to read the RFC emissions embedded in the more recent PCGS slabs. As such, it was suggested to wrap the contents in aluminum foil, to "foil" the crooks (pun intended).

I've done that with my last three shipments. The cost is negligible, and who knows? Maybe it will reduce the chances of theft? I believe we all agree the insurance proceeds received from having coins stolen don't even come close to the heartache of having coins stolen!

I was pleasantly surprised when I received delivery from DLRC and the inside box was wrapped in aluminum foil. I don't know if they're doing this for all shipments, or only those above a certain value?

Just passing this on, and reminding others of this simple inexpensive technique that MIGHT help a little bit!

They’ve been doing it for awhile, as I commented about it back in February in this thread. I was surprised as well.

I’m uncertain as to when they decide to use foil or not, as I have received more recent DLRC shipments without it.

Someone in another thread posited that the postal thieves will start figuring out that aluminum foil = high value, assuming they’d have some way to detect it.

I hate to have to think about these what-ifs, but that’s the world we live in.

I was that someone, based on your last sentence. It’s almost impossible to stay ahead of postal thieves these days, but we have to try. Key word in Steve’s post is MIGHT!

At least in DC there has been an uptick is postal worker thefts. Maybe they have information that they were using the X-ray machines to find coins and jewelry.

Then all they need to do is throw in a low value dime or modern quarter in the newer holder - outside the foil - so it scans something uninteresting.

Catch and release applies to all that steal and then are released

You did. "Catch and release" explicitly refers to immigration policy, not general criminal detention policies.

But, even if you misunderstand and are using the term incorrectly, the only thing I assumed is that you think it's ok to make a blatant political statement despite knowing better.

If it's any consolation I understood what you were getting at. Unfortunately the reality is that we likely don't have the resources to detain and prosecute every common criminal.

To be fair here, the term has been applied to criminals for as long as I can remember, way before illegal immigration became a "thing".

As we were saying, creating a farraday barrier is worth the effort, foil, mylar. I'm gonna use it cause it's something proactive.

Probably the crooks are on to all methods designed to foil them. Could also order other metal foils, copper, lead, etc..

General consensus is aluminum foil is more effective than Mylar although farraday material is often three layers, foil copper and film

Our host should also consider not using a twenty-coin box for returning coins. Anyone with knowledge of our hobby knows what that shape and rattling sound from inside contains. No need to read the package with an electronic device.

Wouldn't an x-ray image of the package show a coin? Does the usps x-ray packages.

A strip of cheap foam would stop that.

Tile costs about $25 each. I use it all of the time when I know the recipient will return it with my coins (like with CAC/CACG, my coin photographer, Rick Snow, etc.). I tried it once with PCGS, but did not get it back.
