Some surprisingly strong results in the HA toned showcase auction tonight!

Anyone follow the Heritage toned showcase auction tonight? There were a few coins that I liked mixed in with a bunch that were decent but not special. I found the end results to be quite strong, including some lower grade Morgans (there were a few MS 62 NGC Morgans without stars that did well relative to what I expected).

One of the biggest surprises of the night was this 1987-S PCGS PR 68 DCAM Silver Eagle. It was a nice proof toner but I was shocked by the $3k final hammer (includes the b.p.).

    Be careful. Heavily toned SAE's seem to be available by the bucketful.

    I am not surprised by any auction results from Heritage. I can’t win anything from there any more, and I’m not posting bag bids. I have either tied or come in second eight or nine times in the past several months. Retail dealers are getting my money now.

    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    Nice price, can’t beat that! :) I’ve been putting a toned proof set together but is taking
    quite a long time to put together and still not even close. Makes me appreciate mine even more but I know
    when I go to sell mine I won’t get anywhere close to those prices…….lol

    You never know-I wouldn’t be surprised if some of yours put up very strong numbers at auction (can’t guarantee 3k of course but given how nice the ones I recall are, they should do well).

    While I started out being more skeptical of toned ASEs, I have softened my position over the years. I think there are quite a few questionable examples that have made it into straight graded holders. However, the truly nice ones, with what I consider to be nice market acceptable color, are not too common (nor are they available in large quantities).

    Imo it is just this type of stupid money chasing color that incentivizes the crooks and doctors to work even harder.
