Dallas PCGS On-Site Grading Event

Has anyone been there yet? And if you so, how strict are they on their Covid-19 policy.

Probably not much of a Covid problem in Dallas.

I’m not aware of any Covid-19 policies aside from a few scattered hospitals.

  • Haha, I appreciate the responses. I ask because on their site they show their Covid Policy on the same page as the event. I thought it was a joke.

Does anybody know anything about the "event"? Is it just grading or is there more?

Here is the link to the show/event.
I guess it is being called special event since it is at Heritage . It appears to be basically the same as other pcgs grading shows. PCGS was offering tables to dealers similar to pcgs other shows. I don't know how full it is but generally there are around two dozen dealers (not all have inventory displayed but most have some).

Edit to add that at the pcgs LV shows many of the dealers are heading out on Friday.

I went and submitted 17 Jefferson nickels for onsite grading on Oct 9. Results showed up online the next afternoon (Oct 10) in my app and are ready for pickup tomorrow. Just shows grades and no attributions. I submitted 2 45 P DDRs (803 and 804 varieties) Full Steps. The 45 Ps just show MS65 annd MS64. Also I submitted a 55 D over S and my online results page just shows a grade of MS66. I hope the designation is on the sticker. Anyone know anything about how they post your results?

Your posted grades are exactly what is going to be displayed on the labels, meaning that if the D/S variety doesn’t show in the details page, it will definitely not be on the label.

I hate to say it, but your entire order is going to be messed up. They are going to have to go back in, reholder everything and varieties are gonna have to get added. Good news is that if they charged you for the varieties, they will have to fix the labels for free. Bad news is they may have to take the coins back to Newport Beach to attribute and fix them.

What you need to do is when you pick them up, examine all the coin labels right there, do not leave the table with the coins. Tell customer service they forgot the varieties and resubmit them as a mechanical error submission right there.

Oh wow. Was I supposed to notify them of the varieties? Yeah I’m pretty sure they will have to take the coins with them. I appreciate you telling me not to leave the table until I get them to agree to fix the designations. Thanks

PCGS generally does not do variety attribution via show grading.

I’ll consider hopping on a quick flight to drop off a few coins, but only if @MFeld will be there 😂.

  • I can’t believe PCGS doesn’t do variety attribution. The mint error box is definitely not on the show submission sheet, but I even told the person at tenet desk what the coins were. She assured me they would be graded correctly. I should have made double sure.

I might not be interpreting your submission correctly so need to check the following to verify it is what you have.
Note: I can't help with the past submission problems noted - just looking forward.

On your submission you would want the variety attribution (VA) and not error. The show submission form does not have the VA but below is the normal form showing it as a line item $20 add on. When you pick up the items perhaps pcgs can take the VA coins only back with them and do the added VA service (and mail back - additional costs?).

On VA some are done automatically with no additional cost but most require the VA add on service and fee.

The 55 D over S appears to be one that could be an automatic (if pcgs agrees with the attribution). For this I point to the coinfacts page for it and it showing as a major variety (should be automatic). It is also shown similarly in the price guide. See below for screenshot. This would be coin/pcgs number 4058. However, if one wants the FS501 included, then it would require a VA service and fee as this is designated as a die variety. Again need to check all this as I might be off.

On the 45 P DDR 803 and 804, those are shown as die variety. So I believe pcgs will do the VA on them but will require the VA service and fee. Again see screen shot below and check to verify this is correct.

That is not the Show Submission form. As you can see, there is no variety box on the show submission form. You can only drop them off for home office grading.

Hey guys I really appreciate all your input. I picked the coins up today. I was told by a PCGS representative that they “don’t advertise “ that they don’t grade any varieties at onsite grading events. I have to send the coins in to PCGS myself and pay the extra money to get the VA. They then will apparently put them in a new slab and mark the variety. I actually asked the representative when I was dropping the coins off do they do varieties such as D/S and designations such as full steps. She said yes no need to fill that out. That made sense since to me as there was no variety box to check. When I picked them up did she say the reason they don’t do errors because they have to grade them fast. And I definitely feel the two 45 P DDRS should receive a full step designation. I’ll get a better look when the pictures populate online. Again, thank you guys. 😊
