Rainbow Bicentennial Quarter - Does it exist?

littlebearlittlebear Posts: 1,590 ✭✭✭✭✭

I saw some incredible quarters posted in another thread. What I have never seen yet, on the internet or at any coin show, is a proof rainbow target toned Bicentennial Quarter. I have seen the Bicentennial dollar and the half in this condition, but never the quarter. My question is, has anybody ever seen one? Any pictures?

I don't have any pictures, but yes, I have seen some. Years ago I bought a couple of uncirculated rolls of Bicentennial quarters. The collector had them in a plastic tube with cotton in the top and taped shut. When I opened, the top two pieces had nice toning including purple on the top coin that had touched the cotton.

The 1976-S proof 40% bicentennial came in capsules, so the coin had to be physically removed and put into an aftermarket holder that would facilitate toning. Having said that, it will only be a matter of time until they start showing up as people pull them out of complete albums like a Dansco.

Obviously these are not proofs, but they are both target toned. And yes, these are incredibly hard to find although I do know of a couple of others.

I have well over a hundred of these that I keep in an old men's regimental, wooden, felt lined jewelry box. They have been in there for 25+ years.... not a smidgen of tarnish... Cheers, RickO

Here is a coin in my collection currently grading MS67+ so it has not moved up to being my "set coin" (which is an MS68). But, I grade this coin MS68 and, one day, if the "grading gods" agree with me, it will likely become my set coin.

This is not my coin, but I took pictures of it 15 or so years ago. Was in a PCGS PF-68 DCAM Holder if my memory serves me correctly. It was spectacular in hand.

@Rossy - please please please don't hold your collector coins by holding them in the palm of your hand or lying them on your fingers. Especially for an uncirculated or (gahdforbid) a Proof coin. The sweat and schmutz from your skin can do all sorts of nastiness to them. You don't necessarily need to go so nuts as to wear gloves, but please please please hold them by the edges between your fingers. Preferably over a soft surface in case you drop it. Thank you. Three thousand years of coin collectors thank you ;);)

My old LCS had a rainbow toned clad proof. It was a gorgeous piece.

They are nice bicentennial quarters, well preserved.
But they do not have rainbow toning.
Millions exist without the toning, and many were saved, so they are not worth much more than face value (25c).
