Things were made of plastic from Neptune. Impossible to crack.
Well, almost impossible.
Super tough holders for sure. I have a couple for my holder collection, a better date although I'm sure it would not grade mint state.

I think I have one left, a ‘78cc Obv DMPL, the rest I cracked out over the years. It’s a struggle getting coins out of SEGS holders.

I just little the beefy feel of these slabs. But I also like the old small ANACS slabs. I guess that both ends of the spectrum! 😉

I only have one in my collection. It is a pillar dollar. I bought it because the price was cheap, despite the fact that the coin had been dipped.
Two other SEGS coins come to mind. The first was an 1848-C quarter eagle. The grade was MS-63. The dealer who had it also had a PCGS graded 1848-C quarter eagle in a PCGS MS-63 holder. The PCGS coin was slightly better, but no by much. The dealer wanted $6,000 for the SEGS piece and $20,000 for the PCGS piece.
Six grand was a fortune for me at that time when I was a dealer. I though that the coin was a sold crack-out candidate, but it didn't make sense given my finances. The dealer gave it to me on consignment. I sold it to one of the largest dealers in the industry at a Bay State Coin show for a nice mark-up. I will guarantee you that that coin did not stay in the SEGS holder for long.
The second piece was a very nice Mint State Shield Nickel. The problem was it had a fairly large hanging lamination that was still attached to the coin. It was very cool looking, but at $600 in a SEGS holder, it was a risk. Only a error collector would want something like that. It was an example of the problems that the Philadelphia Mint had making coins with "the devil's copper" at that time. That was one of the few consignment pieces I didn't sell after having it for a couple weeks and had to return.
Part of my interesting nickel set, if I see a dirt cheap nickel that just misses the preferred collector grade but has multiple other positive attributes I tend to pick the up. Best part of my cheap nickel set is I can keep it at home and away from the SDB

Forgot I had this one, I think the rev is not all there for a PL at one of the major services but it is a nice looking coin.

The holder itself i think it's the best one ever used. Sturdy, has a solid feel, and the coin label on the top is something I wish the other TPGs would adopt on their holders.
I tend to think they were well graded too, I haven’t seen too many where I fundamentally disagreed. Sure a point here or there or a designation that isn’t the same standard as say PCGS but that could be said for any holder.

I cracked and crossed one successfully over to PCGS. I needed a bandsaw to open the darn thing!

World's greatest holder. world's most inconsistent grading
This coin was in a SEGS holder as a PR67 and PCGS popped it to a SP68.
I’m not sure why my original post didn’t show but, I’ll try again.
I had 2 sets on Nickels from the FSNC and when Ron Landis made additional ones I grabbed 2 complete
sets, including silver, copper and gold.. I just needed to give them information about the old ones and I think they
did a great job..

As the label says, "NICE FOR 38'S". If only all tpgs had the top, side label feature - it would make stacking and storage so much more manageable.
If we were all the same, the world would be an incredibly boring place.
