PLease School Me on Rolls of Unopened 1964 Kennedy Halves....

I'm not very knowledgeable on coins, but I inherited a couple dozen rolls fo 1964 Kennedy Halves.

I know they are kind of significant due to the silver content, and I have seen a couple videos detailing things like patina and double strikes giving more value....

Assuming the rolls need to be opened and gone through to assess value. How would a novice like myself approach such a task, with an eye toward assessing honest value???

Thanks-

Do you know how to post pictures here yet?

  • Not yet. I'm new here.....

Gonna be a few days before I have time to do that.

If the coins on the end of the rolls don't display any patina (toning), it is unlikely that the others will. As for varieties, my guess would be that whatever you see on the end of the rolls (if both obverse and reverse are visible) is probably representative of the entire roll.

They are not like the roll above. They are tight and professional looking. Looks like a machine stamped them tight enough to roll the ends inward tightly. The paper is very thick. Like cardboard.

@Manifest_Destiny - How did you know that?

You can see 1964 on both ends?

You’re looking for cartwheel Luster on coins that are not banged up.
Using a somewhat bright light observe the coin while tilting and rotating. The hits will illuminate. The more the hits the worse the grade.

Absolutely do not clean or touch the surface of the coins.

I guess we'll wait for better pictures. Show both ends of all the rolls.

I just want to see good pictures of the rolls and all the ends. We'll be able to tell what's inside.

They are easy to sell on the Precious Metals Forum, right here.
If you put them up on ebay they will sell there too but ebay takes 13%.
So, just price them at a discount to the ebay sales for rolls and they will likely sell on the Forum.
    Just a thought.

$225/roll seems to be the going ebay price.

Weigh them. Should weigh around 250 grams if 90% silver. If less, they may be mixed and require opening.

Salient advice from both @AUandAG & @jesbbroken. I can only add if you decide to sell them in bulk, a $200/roll price point should get it done.

  • Are these worth going through myself for stuff like double-die strikes and other oddities?

Also, a lot of them do have nice patina.... I'm assuming those would be worth breaking out and selling individually....

  • Just trying to get a feel for the process... Of sorting through them..... I have several dozen rolls, so I'm thinking I may find some double/triple die strikes.... Which imperfections would be worth paying for grading?

  • MsMorrisineMsMorrisine Posts: 33,936 ✭✭✭✭✭

not all color is worth something. for a 1964 half you'll need a great grade too.

somewhere above i posted links to variety vista. the doubled (with d) die (the die has doubling, not the strike) pages. ddo is obverse and ddr is reverse. for some reason, variety vista has all marked ddo, despite some listings are qdo, for example

you'll need magnification to see them best.

not all die doubling is worth something to the broad market. the tiny ones might be interesting to a kennedy half collector really into varieties.

btw, rpm is repunched mintmark. that's a die variety too

A "double strike" is not the same as a doubled die, so I'm not sure which you are actually hoping to find.

In any case, rare varieties are rare for a reason. The chance of finding one is very small.

By all means you can search them, but just be aware of the odds.

If they're all identically wrapped, that would infer that they all came from the same group so I would pull one roll at random and check that one for varieties etc. If you don't see any, the overwhelming odds are that you won't find any in the other rolls. If you do find something, you could post it here for opinions to see if worth certifying etc. but the odds are against that.
Otherwise, this is a massively hoarded date for multiple reasons (last year of 90% silver, first year of JFK halves, post assassination sentimentality, etc.) and will likely be only worth silver value even in uncirculated condition.
