    Alaska’s Sandhill Cranes migrate to the United States West Coast as winter approaches.

    View here as just filmed minutes ago on this early September morning as a honking pair of Sandhill Cranes take flight from Anchorage Alaska over the waters of Cook Inlet. The view is from Anchorage’s Coastal Trail.

    This morning:

    The Alaska Railroad and the U.S. Forest Service have partnered to offer a unique wilderness experience offered nowhere else in the world.

    Accessible only by rail on Alaska Railroad’s Glacier Discovery Train, the Chugach National Forest backcountry is opened up for hiking on improved trails, rafting or kayaking on a glacier lake and adjoining river, and unique views of the rugged Kenai Mountains.

    In this video the Glacier Discovery Train with its passenger cars and an added Ultra Dome Car designated as The Wilderness Explorer are seen departing Anchorage Alaska.

    On board is a Wilderness Cafe Snack Bar and unlike the privately owned Ultra Dome Cars on other trains, passengers are free to visit the Wilderness Explorer Ultra Dome Car if the otherwise reserved seats are not filled.

    ALASKA'S SHORTEST TRAIN

    Holland America is one of the cruise lines that owns its own Ultra Full Length Dome Rail Cars. Usually they team up with Princess Cruise Line to contract with the Alaska Railroad to have multiples of their Ultra Dome Rail Cars pulled together by an Alaska Railroad locomotive.

    However on this one September morning there were only enough passengers to occupy a single car.

    Watch as the Locomotive with horns blaring departs from Anchorage and heads north to Denali hauling a single Holland America Ultra Dome Rail Car.

    Alaska’s only passenger train that connects Anchorage and Fairbanks departs each summer morning at 8:20 AM. Designated the Denali Star Train it stops in Wasilla, Talkeetna, and Denali Enroute to Fairbanks.

    Watch and listen as horns blare and gate crossings clang. A car speeds across the tracks as the train approaches and the crossing gates begin to drop. Led by double locomotives the rail cars being pulled are in succession a baggage car, an Ultra full length Dome Car, a dining car, a standard passenger car, two compact dome cars and two Wilderness Express Ultra Dome Cars.

    While all passengers have access to the upper level of the compact dome cars, the Ultra full length Dome Cars including the ones at the end of the train are restricted to premium paying passengers.

    THE FOUR PASSENGER TRAINS THAT DEPART DAILY ON THE Alaska Railroad FROM ANCHORAGE

    The First Passenger Train that Departs Daily from Anchorage on the Alaska Railroad is the Coastal Classic Train with its final destination Seward, Alaska.
