RAFTING AMONG SPENCER GLACIER'S ICEBERGS ON ALASKA'S Spencer Lake
Spencer Glacier was in 1907 named after Edward A. Spencer, a time keeper for the Alaska Central Railway (the initial railroad in Alaska), who fatally fell into a crevasse of the glacier in 1905. The early railroad was a predecessor to the Alaska Railroad which was established by Congress in 1914.
In this video the glacier, which rises 3,500 feet above the water, is viewed while rafting along side icebergs on Spencer Lake that broke off from the glacier.

And here are selected photos from the Adventure including views related to the travel by Alaska Railroad's Glacier Discovery Train to the Spencer Glacier Whistle Stop, and rafting on Placer River. Placer River's headwaters originate from nearby Bartlett Glacier which was. in 1907, named after Frank Bartlett who was a civil engineer for the same Alaska Central Railway.

The above bridge that crosses Placer River is an Alaska Railroad bridge.
The below bridge is a pedestrian bridge which is the longest clear span glum timber truss bridge on the continent. Named the Placer River Trail Bridge It was built in 2007 and spans 280 feet.
Pictured below is the terminus of our seven mile rafting down the Placer River at a point where we pulled up along side the Alaska Railroad tracks to await being picked up by the Glacier Discovery Train:
Below is a photo I took on a prior occasion of the above referenced Bartlett Glacier from which the headwaters of Placer River flow.
Bartlett Glacier is an Alpine Glacier and exceeds the size of any of the Swiss Alpine Glaciers. It is also the Glacier which is situated closest to the Alaska Railroad being within half a mile from the tracks.
And this is the Glacier Discovery Train as we waited to board it on our earlier departure from Anchorage. It operates only in the summer and this is its last week of operation. Also pictured is a view from the train as it progressed along Turnagain Arm to the Spencer Glacier Whistle Stop for our rafting on Spencer Glacier and Placer River.

When my mother and father came to America in 1957 they landed in
Harvey, Illinois. Either Sinclair or Pure Oil had research labs there. In
1960 they moved to Crystal Lake, N.W. of Chicago. My father worked
for either Sinclair or Pure Oil there. Wish I had asked him a little bit more
about the families early history.
Every New Years Eve my dad would paste in the Green Stamps. Guy
Lombardo on the TV. Our first COLOR TV was purchased with Green
Stamps. Also our first microwave.
