I have no financial interest in this story, but thought that some in the group might find it interesting.

    This has been discussed before.

    A very 19th century aristocrat collection, with massive national and international scope. The likes of which are not formed anymore. Reminds me of Virgil Brand.

    I haven’t studied the Bruun collection, but I know much of his holdings were sold many years ago- it’s not too difficult to find a coin with the Bruun provenance, and many coins of his were donated or otherwise acquired by museums. This is just what is left over!

    No doubt it will. The more interesting question is how the market will absorb this sort of quantity. I expect the trophy coins to do very well and the rest to be pretty reasonable. Time will tell.

    It will be interesting to see what's actually there.

    When the two sales were held in 1925, the British, Scottish & Colonial in part 1 amounted to 965 lots, many of which were bulk lots with plenty of variety. e.g. Lots of a dozen mints at a time, and the Colonial was 35 lots in quantities of up to 63 coins. That sale covered Celtic through to Edward VII and was a reasonably comprehensive selection up to the end of George II suggesting there will be duplicates of these this time around.

    The second sale was Continental and Medals. 443 lots of Spanish, French, German bracteates, Greek, Roman and American coins, plus medals. Again, plenty of bulk lots, with the largest being 289 Papal bronzes with a few tin from Alexander III to Leo XIII in very fine state, which in the parlance of the time meant not bad at all.

    I'm amazed he found the time to collect them all.

    True, I'm aware of the two Sotheby sales of his British and some world/ancient coins in the 1920s. I believe there were at least 3 other auctions of Scandinavian and other coins in the 1920s, at Hess and Hede (or Ahlstrom?) I think. Plus a number of coins that were donated or sold privately over 100 years ago.

    It would seem these 5 auctions and sales barely made a dent in what remained!

    I am quite curious as to whether much British material remains. I suspect not the early stuff, with the Saxon stuff sold and the Anglo-Viking donated.

    I think VF of that day is modern EF, or MS 62 ish.

    No firm dates yet, but they've said the first sale will be held this fall, presumably in Copenhagen.

    Here is another pop one at this time.,

    LOT DESCRIPTION
    SWEDEN. Riksdaler, 1615. Stockholm Mint. Gustav II Adolf (Gustavus Adolphus the Great). PCGS AU-55 Secure Holder.

    KM-69; AAH-23b; Dav-4515; Bruun-741. Type II, Large shields.; "HAERE" at end of obverse legend which is obscured from view by the holder. Armored bust of King left holding short staff, legend around in two lines divided by beaded boarder; Reverse: Christ standing facing arms extended, Globus cruciger in right hand, in left field crowned individual arms of Sweden (Kalmar Union), Folkung lion and seal of the house of Vasa. In July 1610, more than a year before Gustav II Adolf was crowned king, Sweden entered into the Ingrian war (1610-1617) which was a failed attempt to place a Swedish ruler on the Russian throne. After the siege of Pskov which ended 27 February 1617 the Treaty of Stolbovo was signed which awarded the Province of Ingria to Sweden and stripped Russia of access to the Baltic Sea. Much nicer than normally seen with an excellent strike giving definition to fine details. Attractive slate tone in the open fields and atop the devices and lovely soft grey in amongst the devices.

    I am already going to madrid show end of June I have to see how busy I am to get away to Denmark for this auction...
    It will be a sensational one imo.

    However at least I heard many of these coins will be at the summer ANA for viewing.......which I will do !

    That 1496 Noble is a beauty. Well out of my league. I wonder if
    there will be any 1478 half ortugs and ortugs. When will the 1st

    Slabs are OK when they involve authentication. When it comes to grading collectors need to learn how to grade and set their own strict standards. There is too much reliance on someone else's "opinion" these days.
