    If I'm just doing a type set I'd pick the MS64 piece...otherwise I'd go with the scarcer date.

    I'd be in it for the Type but in just looking at the individual coins, I chose the 1854 MS64... I dont like what appears to be hairlines behind Ms. Liberty's head on the 1868...

    The reason I’m considering the trade is indeed I am also a type collector and if I did this, everything in my set would be 64 and higher save for my type one and type two dollars.

    I’m leaning towards doing it. The value is very similar.

    I have changed my mind. The 1854 (per the image) looks nicer for the grade than the 1868. Additionally, while the 1868 is a better date, it is not one of the truly better dates in the series - 1854-D, 1854-O, 1855-S, 1858, Civil War dates, early 1870's, early 1880's all ahead of the line. While I generally value rarity over common, I think that I would pick the 1854 in this case.

    I always go for a rarer date over common + grade but that doesn’t mean I would settle for that 68 unless I got it cheap enough that I could net money on it’s exit to a better/rarer coin.

    I'm going to address this from a different angle.
    First I am part of the scarcer date camp here.
    However I don't feel that the 1868 is a very good candidate for a scarcer date.

    The dates below have many less existing coins in all grades than the 1868, which shows a 1250 estimate on PCGS coin facts.

    1866- 500 in all grades,, per trends. it is more expensive than 1868 in high grade circ condition, also much rarer in the upper grades. An AU-58 is 20% higher in trends.
    1867- 400 in all grades, per trends. it is more expensive than 1868 in high grade circ condition, also much rarer in the upper grades. An AU-58 is 20% higher in trends.
    1869- 600 in all grades, per trends less expensive than 1868 in high grade circ condition, also much rarer in the upper grades.

    Also the auction prices realized in the last year or so tend to be lower than the trends shown.

    You can check other dates the same way. You will find more that give additional bang for the buck in scarcity.
    I know its not easy to keep searching for coins, after you feel you've found one.

    Definitely the 1854. I'm mainly a type collector too, I know some people will build a type set using key/semi-key/tough dates, but I prefer going with common dates in higher grades.

    In reality really nice type coins are a perennial favorite with collectors while much better dates attract serious cognoscenti, serious students completing collections more.

    You made the correct choice. Might just be scratches on the plastic, but that 1868 is throwing up some red flags for me.

    Good decision. I would try it at CAC as well, I like the way the coin looks from those pics. If it misses, it shouldn’t miss by much.

    The 1868 wasn’t bad, it did have some hairlines but pretty reasonable for the grade, I liked it because it was a better date however, all along I really wanted one in MS.

    This one really fits my set well! I had to pay kind of strong for it however, I got a really good price for the 1868 when I applied it towards this new one…

    All said and done, I’m in this well below gray sheet bid.

    Very happy with this addition!

    It fits in perfectly with the rest of your set. Those $3 and type 2 $1 coins start getting pricey in mint state.

    All I need to upgrade is the type one dollar and the type two dollar, I want both in MS64, the type one is a cakewalk. I just have to find one I like, but yes, the type two is going to be a nosebleed but at this point, I probably will go for it because then I’ll have everything 64 or higher!

    That will be a super fun acquisition!
