I believe I have a 1943 P Nickel struck on a Gold planchet. Tested with gold acid test.

Hello everyone, I noticed one of my 1943 P Nickels was gold in color so I took a chance and used my acid golf test kit by scratching it on my test pad then adding the 10kt acid test and it did not dissolve. Did not go any farther because I did not want to damage it any more. I have checked all my books and researched it completely. A nickel error struck on a gold planchet is not noted anywhere. Would like some opinions because I'm seriously thinking about sending this one to PCGS but I am just not sure😵‍💫

just to check .. you took a rare, potentially unique, coin and purposely scratched it? That's terrible. Can you post a few photos of this item?

It could be gold plated, but that is just post mint damage - it doesn't add any value. Weigh it and you will likely find that it is the normal weight for a nickel (5 grams).

All you need to do to upload images is drag the image from your computer to the text box you are typing in and it will show up. I have not attempted to do so with a phone, but it may work the same way.

The silver is there but wearing off where the gold is showing through. That's why I tested it

I think you have that backwards. The gold is wearing off where the nickel is showing through.

You are probably correct. However when I added the 10kt gold acid test solution on my test pad it did not dissolve at all. I checked some fake jewelry as well it dissolved them immediately

Nope the silver is on the surface in some areas but the gold color is shining all over where it's worn down

Just a stained/discolored normal war composition silver nickel. If you are convinced that everyone here is wrong or misleading you, you can submit it to PCGS. That will be a colossal waste of your money but you will then have a certified opinion that will be the same as all the free ones you have received here.

Oh to my friend above a war nickel normal weight is 4.68 grams. It wasn't until 1966 when all Nickels to today is 5.0 grams😊

If it was on a gold planchet, it would weigh around 8.5g.

Well Thank you all for the help. If I decide to send it in. I've only waisted 117 dollars. I look at coins daily for years and I've never seen a nickel that looked like this it's much heavier than 4.68 grams lol. So it's on the wrong planchet regardless 🤣 so we shall see. 😁

🤣 It's much heavier than 4.68 grams so definitely on wrong planchet just not sure the composition🤣🤣

It was 5.9 obviously on the wrong planchet. I just don't know which one. I'm guessing being a war nickel on a wrong planchet that my 117 dallars for grading could bring a good premium at Heritage auction 😊 couldn't hurt to try. I just like to see what others have to say. I knew about the 1913 nickel but it is the only one. I apologize I should of mentioned itol. No other nickel has surfaced or at least been graded on a gold planchet. Like I said prior being 5.9 grams I'll send it in could not hurt. I'll only be betting on myself 🤣🤣

You are probably definitely correct 😁. However weighing 5.9 grams it's on the wrong planchet so going to send it for a grade anyway. You were definitely correct on that part🤣🤣🤣
