I'm not good with gold, one reason I like to see a CAC bean on certified gold. Should not be in an unc holder imo and the obv looks a bit off, maybe putty?

I don’t see signs of putty but if the color’s accurate, it’s very unusual and I’d question it.

Looks like a 58 but those pics are leaving much to be desired.

Thanks for your thoughts Mark, pre 33 gold is an area I am very weak on.

The off color could be from the pic and the lighting used to take it. It looks like it's in a slab. Can we get a pic of the entire slab?

Looks likely a SEGS slab (I've seen a lot of them)... If it's segs assume 2-4 grades too high and possibly damaged somehow (cleaned or otherwise).

I could be a nice coin with PVC residue. The only way to know for sure would be to try an acetone treatment.

10-D is not a rarity, so you should be able to find plenty to choose from for your collection. Personally I would pass, but if this one interests you, your due diligence should include asking for better pictures before pulling any triggers.

But couldn't the color be due to putty residue?

How do you determine if there is sign of putty? I know its something to do with the color but I'm not very familiar with it.

Putty, after it has been on the coin for a while, will turn into a white chalky film sometimes with a bluish tint.

I suppose so, but I don’t see any associated residue in the pictures.
The color could also be due to cleaning, though I don’t see evidence of that, either.

It’s an unattractive coin that I would pass on unless the price is right.

Poor quality photos that are useless for grading.

I agree. I'm not saying that it IS putty. But it looks like there is some kind of film or residue on the coin. The specific source of that is harder to ascertain. I once had a coin in hand that had the same pinkish hue that was clearly "puttied", that's the only reason I asked.

It was certainly a reasonable question. And has been pointed out, the pictures are other than exemplary.

I’m not sure if that’s the case here, but it’s a great feeling when you take a gamble on the sellers bad pics, and then the coin arrives and turns out be gorgeous in person.

I'm not impressed by unusual toning on gold as some are, in this case a red flag, but would likely dip out.

Updated Pics... still not the best. The dark area in the upper left of the obverse and in the same place on the reverse has to be a lighting issue... I'm still working on this one. I might just try to post a video... and a "reveal" of sorts...

I think it's an attractive coin, though still likely AU.

That area on the obverse which you mentioned seems in the newest photo to display a sort of corduroy effect which I'm not sure I've seen before. It doesn't look like die-polishing lines to me.

I'd still buy it if the premium over melt isn't too big.
But then this is my favorite gold coin design.

Looks like someone tried to slice that eagle's wings and leg. Plus, the toning (especially how the coloring under the letters is noticeably lighter) is suspect.

    Pass.

It's a defect in the slab plastic. I've seen it in a few generations of this OGH that OP has. Annoying!

As to the OP coin: Not sure. Could have some hidden hairlines. Color seems bad in the first photo but others are OK. This is a common date so I'd look elsewhere.

Is it visible anywhere else on this slab?

Usually just on the parts that are raised over and around the coin. Light hits it at a certain angle and its visible, otherwise not visible. Super noticeable under a loupe.

This explains a lot! Yes, what I thought might have been some sort of odd toning goes away when I tilt the slab in a slightly different direction. I also seemed "pixelated" ... for lack if a better description...
