Hi Everyone,
Can anybody see anything going on with this 1871 Indian Head apart from probably being struck with a worn out die and a fair share of cud?

Looks AU to me. I see die cracks but no cuds.

A coin that many, many collectors would like to own.
Nice AU better date Indian. Looks like it served a short time in circulation. Nothing I see out of the ordinary. Perhaps another round of better pics in true lighting would help.
What's causing the shadowing around the obverse devices?

Because the camera lens wasn't exactly perpendicular to the coin my guess.

Why do you want anyone to grade it? That's a serious question, and the answer to that can change the answer to your question.
I would keep it raw and put into an album. It is a coin that can stand on its own and not need slabs or stickers to find an enthusiastic buyer.
Too much gunk for AU. Just an XF to my eyes.

Looks like a pretty decent strike on a nice AU... and a tougher date to find nice.

No. I'm not taking about light shadows. The fields are a different color than the spaces around the letters. It's not lighting. It's either a luster difference or a film. Could be PVC residue, as one possibility.
Dentils on both sides are crisp. I don't see worn out dies. And I think you meant crud, not cud.

Looks like a terrific example of a much better date. Most anyone would be pleased to own this coin.
As an aside, it is pretty rare for PCGS to close or delete a thread based upon a request in the thread from the person who started it. In general, when folks get their answers they leave the contents of the thread intact and allow it to sink, which then acts as a library or archive for others when they search the forums looking for information. Regardless, it appears to be a great coin and your images are terrific.

Why?
Gunk is generally not an indicator of wear. An AU coin can have more gunk than an XF coin, but still be a technically higher grade. Using gunk as a basis for grading a coin is not reliable. I've seen many MS coins with so much gunk that it obscures details, but the presence of that gunk alone will not greatly influence the coin's grade.
