TAX REFUND!!!

I am working on a PCGS Type set, and been getting a few lower grade PCGS key date coins. I have been spending up to $400-ish on the type coins and a little more for the key date ones. I have an 'extra" $1000 from my tax refund, any thoughts on what I should get next? Here are some Type coins I need and some Key dates also . . . thoughts?

Three Cent Silver
Seated Liberty 20 Cents
Capped Bust Quarter
Liberty Seated Quarter
Barber Half Dollar
Liberty Seated Dollar
Trade Dollar
Fugio Cent

1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent
1922 No D, Strong Reverse Lincoln Cent
1955 Doubled Die Lincoln Cent
1972 Doubled Die FS-101 Lincoln Cent
1937-D 3 Legged Buffalo Nickel
1916-D Mercury Dime
1942/1 Mercury Dime

An AU Trade dollar and a 42/1 Merc would be my $1k gone.

Be patient then you'll be happy long term with your purchases.
I have two DPL's on the BST because I ended up with multiple dates from not being patient.

Do not get in a hurry -pick the hardest coin to get (type) ; That way it is all easy cruising as you get closer to completion. I do not think anyone has lost money buying an 1877 Indian cent or a high relief St if you have them for a decade.

I'm also of the mindset that if you have a short list, be patient and wait for something that's on the list and absolutely speaks to you.

That said, if you see a Capped Bust Quarter that check's all the boxes, don't hesitate. The right ones rarely come around.

Instead of the 3 legged Buff. I would go for a truly nice 1913 S Tll AU58 Buff.
Good luck and do show us your choice.

(Over)pay quarterlies. It should be easy to get yourself a refund.

I totally feel your dilemma. When the coins get tough and expensive, stretching for them becomes nerve wracking and you want to make the most of the opportunity. Like you, I create a list and try to prioritize it.

My biggest piece of advice is this... buy something you love! Don't buy something with problems because you feel like "this is your shot". When the newness of the coin wears off, you will see those problems. You will not be able to unsee them. Make sure you smile at the coin for years to come (even after the monetary "good deal" feeling dissipates). Your future self will thank you... and if you decide to sell it, you will thank yourself again.

I am a newer collector (started April 2020), and I primarily focus on U.S. Half Cents and Type Coins. Early copper is my favorite.

You listed quite a few coins that you “need”. Why limit your options, by deciding ahead of time which one to pursue? Look around, be patient and buy the one your see that makes you happy.

That’s because you don’t cheat like most tax non payers do.

I appreciate the nice comment. However, I’d never suggest that a coin be cut in two.😉

OR they might just be self employed, which is a more likely explanation.
