    What kind of condition do the zinc coins have? In the U.S., our one cent coins have been made of zinc for the last 40+ years. They disintegrate or dissolve in the ground. I have dug many of them where only about half the coin was remaining.

    I've seen hundreds of zinc coins from the 1910's and the 1940's over the past few years. Usually they are in very bad condition, you are lucky if you can make out both the date and the mintmark. Only if the ground is very sandy and mild the details are clearly visible.
    Also I don't know if it makes a difference that the German coins were made from pure zinc while your Pennies from 1982 onwards are copper plated.

    This is exactly why I asked. If an 80 year old zinc coin is in better condition than a 20 year old copper plated zinc cent, I suspect galvanic corrosion is a huge factor in destroying what we call zincolns.

    Today I went to a permission with very agressive soil, I suppose it's a acidic, thick clay. There were 3 zinc coins, all of them barely recognizable.

    They were Belgian 10 Centimes and 1 Frank coins (1941 - 1947, year not visible anymore) and a German 10 Pfennig coin from 1921.
    I would say about ¼ to ⅓ of the zinc coins in my area are in such a bad shape, the rest is (slightly) better.
