“Completed” my 10 Coin Peace Dollar DATE Set!

Unlike many collectors, I don’t have the patience for larger complete sets that include coins from each mint for each year, although I give a LOTof credit to those collectors that choose to do that. That does indeed provide a tremendous amount of accomplishment, and those that do that should rightfully be VERY proud!

Doing DATE sets is easier (yes, I’m lazy). Fewer coins are needed (so the cost is less), and more importantly, I can pick and choose which mint to buy for each individual year, since only one coin is needed per year. While some collectors prefer the challenge of going with tougher mints in their DATE set (and I commend them for that), I choose the more common coins for each year. With fewer coins, and including the more common mints for each year, my budget for the set can then search for coins in higher grades! I would not be able to afford to put together a complete date and mint mark set in those higher grades.

That’s my rationale for the DATE sets I’ve put together - Lincoln Wheat DATE set (50 coins), Standing Lib Quarter Full Head DATE Set (14 coins), Morgan Dollar DATE Set - not yet posted on the forum - (28 coins), and now this 10 coin Peace Dollar DATE Set.

In the title to this post, I put the word “Completed” in quotes, since I’m still searching for a few upgrades.

Steve, congratulations on assembling a superb set! As you said, these are common date coins but very much uncommon with such outstanding eye appeal, and I know there must have been concerted effort behind curating the examples you chose. I aspire to upgrade my own “completed” date set into one like this. Thank you for sharing.

Mark - Part of my goal with this post is to inform collectors of this choice they have as a way to collect. Several years ago, before I started my first DATE set (Lincoln Wheat Cents), I had never heard of the collecting concept of a DATE set. I wanted to put together a nice set of Lincoln Wheats (bringing back warm memories of childhood in the late ‘50’s), but the thought of the difficulty and expense held me back. Then I read on a post on this forum about this concept of a Lincoln Wheat DATE Set! Wow! What a great concept that meets MY needs as a collector!

I’m hoping that some other collectors unfamiliar with this concept reading this post will now get a spark, just as I did several years ago!

Steve. I see with the 1927 a hint of golden toning. Certainly that coin must be replaced otherwise it could infect its sisters! 🤔😱😉

Yes, in my weakness, I bought that as a “FILLER”, knowing that at some point I’ll find one in a higher grade that also has the eye appeal that pleases ME! While I may then lose some money when I sell this one, I consider the amount lost as “rent” I paid for having that coin keeping that slot “warm”, as I wait for the final coin for that slot!

Which of the dates is (or was for you) the hardest to find? Which coin(s) is (are) your favorite?

I have also taken to date sets in a couple of places. Often it allows one to build a great set without compromising quality and staying within a reasonable budget.

The hardest for me to find, with the eye appeal that I like, in the grade I want, graded by PCGS, and that merits a CAC sticker, is the 1927 that I mention above in one of my replies.

As to my favorite, I like a LOT of these, especially the ones that in hand have a clean cheek and clean fields. Like with Morgan's, sometimes there are luster breaks or very light hits in these areas that look a LOT worse in photos than they do in-hand. To pick one, maybe the 1926?

Maybe you're thinking of the elusive 1964-D. They were actually made in a quantity of a few hundred thousand at the Denver Mint, but were ordered to be melted. None have apparently turned up, potentially for fear of being confiscated by the Feds. I had read that PCGS was trying to make a deal with the Feds, that if one (or more) did indeed turn up, they would not be confiscated. Who knows?

Amazing, simply spectacular, just jaw dropping, thank you for sharing your incredible collection. I agree with a previous poster the eye appeal on each is so similar in appearance. That is a great example of a well thought out and put together set.

No, I'm thinking of a Dan Carr 1965 Peace dollar. I'm told that since it is struck on a Peace dollar planchet, it is a real coin and not a copy. Therefore, it must be a genuine 1965 Peace $.

Years ago I used to buy non-stickered coins that I thought would sticker, but my success rate was roughly 40% - 50%. I would then turn around and sell the coins that failed. I got tired of those losses. I then would say to dealers with a nice non-stickered coin that i'll buy it at full asking price, pay ALL shipping and submission fees, but if the coin fails, I want a refund of just the price paid for the coin. I'll absorb all of the shipping and submission costs. I didn't have any takers, lol.

As such, all of these Peace Dollars were bought with stickers.

Absolutely no doubt there are people out there with great eyes and have studied CAC stickering successes and failures. They can make a good living doing just that. Matter of fact, i have a young guy who does exactly that, and he succeeded in getting me a few non stickered Indian head cents that were contingent on HIM paying all shipping and submission fees, and only if they stickered by BOTH CAC and Rick Snow's Eagle Eye Photo Seal would I buy the coin from him. On those he had success, I paid him handsomely.

I plan on upgrading three, and I've indicated the 1927 is one of those three. But the slightly paranoid side of me has heard from other collectors that are more paranoid than me to not disclose what I might be after, lol. Those collectors don't even make their Registry sets viewable for that reason. At least I show the grades of each of my coins.

Regarding my 28 coin Morgan DATE Set, I forgot to send one of those for photography. As such, I'll probably show that set on the Forum in mid to late March. However, my set is indeed currently viewable on the Registry. It is Current rank #18.

I'm working on getting a nice 16x20 print of the photo shown in my OP. Thanks. Each individual composite will then be about 8" wide and 4" deep.

For those that don't know, @FlyingAl took these photos. He provides me for one low fee per coin with FOUR photo formats for each coin, as shown below.

He does a phenomenal job of getting the photos to look virtually identical to the coin in hand, including luster, which is so VERY difficult for most coin photographers to successfully capture in a two dimensional photo.

If you look at any of his posts or replies, he has as a hotlink as his auto-signature that provides detailed information of his costs, which are super reasonable. As you can see from the below four formats, the quality is unbeatable.

This photo of my 1926 Peace Dollar was taken in the Fall 2023. Subsequently, he has tweaked the close-up Obverse and Reverse photos to show only the coin without the gasket. He has also tweaked his paired slab shot format to have a little space in between each side in the pair.

Actually, I believe I also read that Dan Carr has made some 1964-D Peace Dollars as well. Since they were NEVER "officially" released, he's allowed to do that!

That is a nice '27. They are tougher to find in the upper MS grades with flashy luster, which that coin has.

I tried to get them to show in order of date but for some reason that didn’t work — but all 10 coins are there - mine is a “poorer” man set as all mine are 64 or 65.

Thanks. That's why i don't yet have one in a higher grade! As with many of my coins in other sets, I will NOT buy an upgrade if the coin in the lower grade is as nice or nicer than the upgrade! I don't care if it has a CAC sticker, and has a grade on the label that I've been searching for. If the new coin is not nicer than the coin it will replace, I pass!

Hey, they look great and well matched. Regardless of grade, collectors should get pleasure and feel proud of what they have, as all of it still takes time for the "hunt" - regardless of grade (yes, I'm intentionally being repetitive)!
