Luster bomb with awesome visual appeal!

The 1858 LL with Low Leaves, while not rare, is unusual. The S-17 variety is an added bonus.

It's one of my favorite US coin designs and one I've always liked. But like other US type I like, I find it too expensive vs. the alternatives. It's also not a coin I would buy below high AU.

Yes I agree. I guess beauty or worthiness is in the eye of the beholder/owner. Microvarietals as I like to term them have a certain base but some of the rest of us just don't care enough for big premiums.

@redraider: the tail detail is especially good, imo, for this date. There seems to have been an issue with a grease filled die that caused the faint front of the left wing. I’ve seen a number of those. The diamond chip above the “”8” looks great & the “7” flag is awesome! NICE!

Thanks Gents. Definitely has the grease issue on the other side of the eagle. Couldn’t agree more on the strike though, all the detail is there where you want it to be. Die stage A with as much of a 7 as you will ever see too!

Of all the 1857 FE varieties, the S-5 shown below has the lowest pop. Who knew? There are only 8 total, with 6 MS pieces - 3 62’s & 3 64’s. Obviously an extreme rarity! There is pronounced doubling on UNITE & the eagle’s beak, with lighter doubling elsewhere.

Besides, would hate to see the FE thread get buried again!

Ken, I love the passion. There was a time when I was so addicted that I was literally buying every FE coming on to the market that was either a variety I didn’t have, or didn’t match any known varieties. Some were just straight die examples where I couldn’t make a die distinction that would qualify as a variety or error. Then there were a few others that became new Snow listings. It was so rewarding. I sold the dupes off, leaving a set of over 100 different FE die combinations, which I sold through EERC. I relive it when you make these posts!!

The latest (& a tough one):
I’ve been looking for what seems like forever to find a replacement for my 63. Thanks to my sharp eyed friend Eric, I bagged this one - it’s essentially PL & fairly graded with nice eye appeal. There’s only 17 in the PCGS pop (13 MS). Note the heavy striations, indicative of an early die state.

This is a recent auction win....
Reverse clashed with a quarter. Tough coin, with only 4 graded higher, one being an example seen in this forum!

Looking at this one. A very lustrous beauty, but I’m concerned there’s too much noise in the lower right obv to warrant the 66 grade. Currently @ CAC & if OK there it goes to EERC.

And if it double stickers, I’m committed to buy.

The “missing link” to my post above:

This coin is graded 66 like the new one, so why go for the new one? I finally received pretty firm concurrence this coin is a PR, not MS. Specifically, it’s a PR-4. I always wondered if this should be a PR instead of MS. Now that I bought the MS above, I can pursue getting this one into a PR holder.

Pretty sweet! I have an 1858 Small Letter, High Leaves PR-1 in an MS65+ holder that is CAC'ed and Photosealed. I believe it is a proof and Rick Snow has it pegged as a proof when you look up the Photoseal on his website. Knowledge PAYS off! I have not tried to get it in the correct holder yet. Maybe we should send both off in the same submission just to mess with them!

Please refer to my post on 4/3/24. The coin cited & pictured in that post was declined by PCGS for the requested PR grade:

Reason given was the obv failed to meet requirements, although the rev was OK. My partner on this coin & I believe the obv requirements have been met & the piece is a PR-4.

There are 3 main obv properties for the PR-4:
1) full U hub on UNITED - check;
2) filled in second “A” on AMERICA - check;
3) diagonal die striations - check.

Our plan is to resubmit after getting more clarification on their reasoning. Hoping…..

I too have a PR SL in a mint state holder. It’s a little dull, and I think that’s why they won’t call it a proof. You’re doesn’t look dull at all, and looks to have cameo contrast.

The saga continues (refer to 5/30 post above) & not in a good way. The coin below was submitted for review before the LB show.

As indicated above, it was declined for PR status the first time around. Instead of review, however, they regraded it. Here’s the new pic:

Different coin? NO - check the ID #’s. The coin is actually a nearly identical match to the old pic. Luckily, I had saved it as it’s now no longer in their system (for public view anyway).

My partner on this mess is @ the LB show & will take this up with PCGS today. Stay tuned!

@rnkmeyer - Yes and no....The cameos really dont show in the photos, but they are extremely difficult to photograph. All photos are from Rick Snow when he photorealed them.

Here’s a new one. The 1858 LL Low Leaves S-13 is a 2* variety in Rick Snow’s definitive guide. According to his census, this coin is tied for the finest known. While it’s not in the FS listings & therefore not eligible for Registry set inclusion, its earmarks are numerous & give the coin an element of coolness. The 63 grade doesn’t detract. The piece has nice eye appeal with only minimal obv chatter keeping it in a 63 holder.
The S-13 has the following: tail doubling; the “RICA” in AMERICA shows doubling; there’s doubling in the “UN” of UNITED & more doubling in the eagle’s eye & beak.
There’s another thread active that deals with collectors looking for varieties. This certainly would fit in that category, even without the FS listing.

Nice coin Ken! I was able to pick this one up last week as well. This Snow-6 is a very similar variety to yours. It is the large letter, low leaves variety. It features very wide doubling on UNITED and the beak. I believe this is the finest known for this one. While in an NGC holder, it is endorsed by CAC and Eagle Eye!

Coin arrived today, here were my quick pictures before I have to head out the door. Doubling is some of the widest in the FEC series, it really should warrant a variety designation at PCGS, much like your S-13.
