Coins Of 1849 ~ Official Thread
1849 is an interesting year for many reasons, among them the Coinage Act of March 3rd which authorized two new gold denominations, the $1 and $20, to facilitate coinage of the large amounts of gold flowing into the mints from California.
In my collecting series, seated quarters, the 1849-o is a top 10 rarity. No mintage figures exist but an estimated 16,000 were coined, included in the mintage figures for 1850-o.

1849 concludes my favorite decade for seated half dollars. From drapery/ no drapery (1839), no mint mark (1840 (O), small date/medium dates (1842 and 1842-O), dramatic doubled date (1844-O), the tall date/medium dates (1846/18460-O), horizontal digit (1846/horizontal 6), overdate (1847/6), and lastly another dramatic doubled date (1849). Then there are all the wild die breaks of the early 1840's.

1849 was a good year for half dime overdates as well, with 3 different ones.

I saw the only minted 1849 Double Eagle in the Smithsonian many years ago.

My ‘rare’ 1849-o half dime!
This may have been my first coin purchase as a youngster circa 1962.
A weird little obsolete type coin, from a defunct mint, and a scarce date to boot! I paid $1.75, which was less than the Redbook price for a ‘good’.
I recently piggybacked it onto an Economy submission at another grading service, and here’s what I got:

Proof braided hair half cents began production in 1840, but it was not until 1849 that the business strikes saw this design. After a 14 year hiatus in business strike production (I do not count 1836 as a business strike), the Mint produced 39,864 half cents for circulation.
I am a newer collector (started April 2020), and I primarily focus on U.S. Half Cents and Type Coins. Early copper is my favorite.

1849 Godless Florin- A one year type issued for circulation. This one is graded by our host.
The Gothic Crown is widely considered to be one of the most attractive crown coin designs. This is a reasonable substitute that fits within the date requirement

I have this 1849/8 H10C PCGS AU58 CAC which has been reclassified as 1849 Overdate FS-302 (001.55) H10C (PCGS #145432), when the 1849/8 variety was removed/reclassified.
