My latest pick up ~ 1897 Barber Quarter

ashelandasheland Posts: 23,755 ✭✭✭✭✭

The toning is decent, but this thing has incredible luster and strike!
Honest opinions, what do you guys think?

I am going to send it back for a reholder and Trueview.

Really nice! I like how the obverse is almost a cameo except with toning instead of mirrors. Very attractive coin.

I don't know the series but if sending it in it's only a few dollars (and a couple of months) more to regrade than to reholder, you may just want to swing once it's going in with value doubling if you make a 66.

    Why not a reconderation?
Looks nice, maybe a + jump?
    Then a CAC?

Very nice Asheland! That’s a great looking Barber.

Thanks everybody! You know, you guys are right maybe I will try for a plus or an upgrade. 👍

It goes out this week sometime so I have a day or two to decide.

From the images it looks nicer than a typical MS65.

Sending it in anyway, why not give it a shot
Good luck, but I don't think you'll need it with that coin :)

I think it is a great looking Barber.

A very eye-appealing coin and very possibly better than MS65. It should be able to stand on its own merits as is but unfortunately "the Market" now demands plastic grades and stickers to achieve full value.

Looks super original to me, and I love the toning.

What a strike...hammered! I just wish there was an 's' on the reverse. :p

Very nice... agree with others, it may be worth going for a bump since you're sending it off anyway. Good luck.

    Thanks everybody!
I have decided it is going back for regrade. I’m even going to send it express so I can get results sooner because I’m impatient :D

Obviously gold shield so it will get a nice True-view.

Earlier today, a friend came by, and I put a Post-it note over the certification and asked his grade, and he guessed 66, so there’s definitely potential here.

My guess is, it’ll probably remain 65, but there is a chance.

    The coin is in encapsulation.
    Hopefully a grade soon!

Don't bother restricting yourself to the same year; go with any year and get the right coin.

    Very nice coin.

Not for me. Way too tarnished for me / will get worse over time. Don’t like the toning / dark area on left obv.

I believe that’s a scratch on the plastic hence my decision to have it reholdered. I recall there being very few marks on the coin.

Looks very nice for the grade. I think it is more marketable in the current holder. Maybe reconsideration for an upgrade or just polish the slab and send to CAC.

I sent it for upgrade in the holder.
    I wanted the Trueview

  • ashelandasheland Posts: 23,755 ✭✭✭✭✭

Just today it moved to QA

  • ashelandasheland Posts: 23,755 ✭✭✭✭✭

Just got word, oh well, it’s still a 65.

Hoping for a nice True view.
    I will post that when it’s available…

Is the TV image slanted somewhat to yellow? I ask because your image doesn't show such a strong yellow hue. Also, I have a couple recent purchases that had TV images and the images were more yellow than the coins. It appears at times PCGS has the white balance off on these images, but I don't know if that is the case for yours.

Honestly I'm not sure, I should have the coin back in a day or two. I'll be posting slab shots to this thread and I'll look into the yellow issue. I'm only going from memory, but I think the True view is accurate...

Looking now the Trueview does slightly look yellow.
I got the coin back yesterday and this slab shot is very accurate to in hand look…

I’m going to make an 1897 thread and show more pictures of it in the new holder…

It’s a streak in the toning. I checked under a loupe. Kinda weird, but noting bad….
