Attempting to steal 6 tons of dimes is not a smart thing to do.

I bet the thieves didn't know it was such a small denomination.

Philadelphia men face federal charges for allegedly stealing 2 million dimes from truckload of coins
Police say that the four thieves stole $234,500 in dimes from the truck

Federal authorities unsealed charges against four men who earlier this year allegedly broke into an unmarked trailer containing 2 million dimes in Philadelphia.

Authorities say that 25-year-old Rakiem Savage, 31-year-old Ronald Byrd, 30-year-old Haneef Palmer and 32-year-old Malik Palmer face conspiracy, robbery, theft of government money and other charges.


Police say that the four thieves stole $234,500 in dimes from the truck. (FOX29 Philadelphia WTXF)


The unmarked trailer contained $750,000 in dimes, according to police (FOX29 Philadelphia WTXF)

    Glad they were caught but how stupid of them to try and convert the dimes at local banks, that story ran for days on the local news, and bank employees were probably told to be on the lookout for such a transaction

    Just imagine if this theft took place in or before 1964.

    The melt value of the stolen dimes would be about 15-18 times face value.

    This whole thing was just silly from the jump. How in the name of all that’s Holy did these Ph.D candidates expect to launder hundreds of thousands of dollars in dimes??? Seriously? You’re looking at a lifetime if you don’t want to get caught.

    The only, and I mean only way I could see it possible would be to open a front business of vending machines. Even then the banks and Feds would be on high alert, so any high dime ratio could do you in. I had a LEO tell me once during a ride along that if it wasn’t for criminals being overwhelmingly of low intelligence, they’d likely only catch 10%. Believe me when I say, he said it in MUCH more colorful language. 😉

    Having fun while switching things up and focusing on a next level PCGS slabbed 1950+ type set, while still looking for great examples for the 7070.

    That would be the melt value today. The melt value in or before 1964 was, at most, about 94% of face.

    What are you going to do with 2 million dimes? You can barely spend cash these days.

    Are you going to back the truck up to the credit card company and offer to pay your balance in dimes?

    This crook is dumber than a bag of hammers. Two million dimes is almost the most illiquid form of money. Only cents and nickels are worse.

    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    During the night, the driver parked the trailer in a Walmart parking. The thieves broke into it there.
