I just got to say it, it's tough reading endless threads re finding legit error modern coinage

RobertScotLoverRobertScotLover Posts: 1,032 ✭✭✭✭✭

when its so obvious that they are practically ALL PMD and it's even harder when they fight the learned members here believing that they struck gold when they obviously haven't. Its just got to stop, one can only hope. Our discussions are filled to the brim with these worthless posts of members trying to get rich. Does it have to be about the money all the time? Blah blah blah.

I feel a whole lot better now getting that off my chest.
Here is a recent acquisition to keep this totally coin related and not end on a negative note:

I don’t even check my change anymore except for silver and that just takes a quick glance.

That is one sweet trade dollar.

I don’t have that much of a problem with it. Most people are happy to learn and just enjoy looking at coins. It’s hard to fault them for that! Who doesn’t like treasure hunting?

  • I find the phenomenon really funny. There are these people who find a messed-up coin and immediately post "Please confirm that this mangled coin is my million-dollar jackpot." Something is telling these people they can find a million-dollar pocket penny and they believe it. There is a cultural zeitgeist saying a coin expert can make $ off pocket change or something.

The substantial truth doctrine is an important defense in defamation law that allows individuals to avoid liability if the gist of their statement was true.

Do you have just a phone slab shot of that coin? It’s be interesting to compare them.

Lots of desperate people looking for an easy way to get rich, combine that with the zillion you tube videos that promise massive wealth the easy way (emphasis on easy) from pocket change and there you have it. Beautiful trade dollar.

Guess I'm blessed that I don't open threads about perceived error coins. No muss, no fuss.

    Beautiful trade dollar!

My paychecks are direct deposited, I pay my bills online, and all my purchases are made with a credit card that I pay the balance in full weekly. I haven't seen pocket change in years, so there's a 0% chance of me ever striking it rich on an error coin. Lol!

Go search 'flooting roof' on ebay to see 9-10 pages of sales with plenty of sellers with little or 0 feedback. The horror if they found their way here. 😒

Just have to put up with it or don't participate in the so called "Error" discusions.

It was too dark for my tastes so I sold it. The photo however is beautiful, but the photo unfortunately doesn't realistically portray the coin.

At the same time I was left a raw AU/BU 1921 SLQ and 2 old time dealers in Chicago were like oh we will pay you 25$ dollara for that... me not knowing any better as this was 17 years ago long before I ever collected...
But still has left a very bad taste in my mouth.
    Just a disgusting experience

Everyone has their own idea of what is fun. And I wouldn't want to discourage anyone from doing whatever they want. However, I really don't understand how someone finds it fun to look for things when they don't know what those things look like. We have the occasional (frequent?) weekend trolls. But we also have some regulars who don't seem to recognize variety types and errors but who have been searching for months or years. Honestly, God bless them, but I don't understand it.

Luckily most of them seem to end up on the CCF.

I'd agree; as far as I can tell, this recent trend with error coins is mainly fed by the YouTube / Social Media hype train, telling people that the coins they can find in their change are worth big bucks, all the while neglecting to mention that 99% of the odd-looking coins they're likely to find will just be damaged coins and worth face value only (unless they're so badly damaged they're no longer legal tender).

And not helped by the misinformation echo chamber that is Facebook coin groups, who will happily tell the cult's acolytes that the trash they've found is really treasure, and to reject any contradictory counsel from anyone who expresses doubt or skepticism about them.

If threads like that bother you then just ignore them. Instead, why not try to start interesting threads for discussion of Numismatic related topics??

If you think it's bad here, imagine running a table at a coin shows where people bring this stuff all day long! I try to help and educate as many of them as I can, but like here there are always a few who don't want that. For them, I suggest they submit their parking lot find, and happily take their money for doing so.

The posts that are from people actually willing to learn and are civil are not a problem, I think we all agree on that.
It's the other argumentative ones that clutter up and diminish the forum.
I think it would be most effective - collectively stop replying to their posts. Let their goofiness sink to the 2nd page, 3rd page, etc.

  • gonzergonzer Posts: 3,053 ✭✭✭✭✭

Then you have that rare moment where, as in JBK's post (DS nickel), a perceived error turns into a ' You Suck' award. For me that was refreshing post.

The average Joe has been priced out of the market for decent US numismatic coins. The search for "rare" errors and varieties in pocket change (and parking lots) is simply a reflection of this situation.

I wonder but, not for long when pondering whether or not it was money that attracted me to this hobby.
Or should I say the allure and still (a part) of the driving force look no further than the Price Guide or any auction or the mirror. If you were never introduced to the hobby you would almost never find it without some sort of help.

What really sucks is only 5 ignores. At that other board, I just put people who ask for opinions and then argue with us on ignore and never see their posts again.

Your ignores are limitless just requires some restraint. I used all five of mine on 4 moderators and Emerald.
