I hate to admit but when I was young there were no rotary phones. I simply picked up the receiver and an operator would say “number please.” Kind of like Lily Tomlin on Laugh In. However, often I would pick up the receiver and two ladies would be jawing. We were on a party line. I still remember our home number “142”.
