I also expected this to grade MS64, NGC said MS65. Now also wearing a green bean.

I thought this coin might be EF-AU from the seller's eBay pictures, then AU58 with a shot at MS when I saw it in hand. It turned out to be an MS63 purchased for less than a P01 price, one of my best "eBay victories."
Admittedly, grading 455-year-old hammered coins in modest circulated grades is challenging, but I was pretty sure this would be Fine-12 or 15, based upon the seller's photos (below) and comparing it to my 1567 that is a PCGS F12.
Instead, it came back quite a bit higher:
I bought this in a PCGS OGH 62. I resubmitted and it came back MS63. It now has a gold CAC. Not the best pics!
Cherry Picked this a few years back on eBay in a unattributed PCGS PR 66 holder for $38. I knew it was Re Engraved Die FS- 401. Once in my hand I saw it looked really nice for a PR 66 but I cracked it out as I had a bunch of other Variety coins I was submitting and figured what the heck, I will just send it in raw as I was confident it would come back at least a 66, maybe even 67. Evidently the graders felt it look really nice the 2nd time also.
Bought this raw in an auction in 1989. Was advertised as EF-40. I graded it a 58/62. NGC thought it was a 58- that was 1990.For $180. I’m quite happy.
I thought this was an MS 65 due to ticks on obverse, came back higher grade.

This coin was in an MS-66 holder but I thought it was nicer than that so I sent it back for regrading hoping it would get a 66+ and it came back MS-67.

Bought this No Motto thinking it looked nicer than the average 63. I think it was only the second gold coin I'd ever bought.
It was the first coin I ever crossed over to PCGS. I thought it'd come back 63; never imagined it would be bumped an entire grade.
It was also the first coin I ever submitted to CAC, thinking "there's no way in hell they would sticker this as a 64." I have yet to repeat this feat, and probably never will. The dangers of peaking too early!
Purchased raw at a Baltimore show circa 2011-2012, submitted at show thinking it was a gorgeous AU-55. Came back at AU-58. Submitted to CAC… and they agreed.
I've never had a US coin upgrade, but I bought this one raw as a mid-AU and was pleasantly surprised when it graded MS.
If CAC gave this coin a green bean in the PCGS MS64 slab, shouldn't CAC have given this coin a gold bean when it was in the NGC MS63 slab?

I didn't know what to expect but it sure wasn't a 67.
I'm obviously not a grader. I was thinking 65 HOPING for 66.

this was an ANACS MS66 crossover to PCGS MS67, only 1 higher
Expected F15 at best, came back XF40, seemingly because of a weak strike.

This Barber was a gift from a family member. When they purchased it and gave it to me the dealer had advertised it as AU.
When I bought this coin from a forum member it was graded AU-55. I thought it looked like MS-62, cracked it out and resubmitted it and it came back AU-58. It still looks like an MS-62 to me.

This was my 1st crack out. The coin looked way better to me than F12 even with the green bean. I was hoping for a F15, maybe a VF20. Boy was I pleasantly surprised when I got it back.

I thought this 1794 cent would come back graded FR2. It came back G4. I clearly do not know 18th century copper

I picked this one up a a lcs….I soaked it in acetone to get some pvc off of it… it definitely not my series but I was thinking 64….. I’d never would have guessed 66! Or full steps!
Had a 1857 Flyer, P64, OGH - really hated to submit it since I loved the holder - came back PCGS 65 Cam - I got over the holder pretty quickly.
Both of these came back higher than I expected…..but they made up for it on the large cents I submitted 😟

Hey, that’s my old coin! I bought it from Witter, and that one was an easy 64 imo. Reverse was more dinged up but all the hits were camouflaged in the eagles feathers. Sold it a few months ago

Not really graded higher than expected, but when I posted these as raw coins, the forum consensus was Genuine/Details. Since I was into the pair for about a $grand, figured it was worth submitting anyway:

Here is another half. I was thinking AU58 on this when I sent it in.
I’m not sure this quite counts but I’ll tell the story anyway. I purchased this very rare Civil War token raw. It is the Virgil Brand collection coin and it is listed as 3 known (Though there are a few more than 3 known, but probably less than 12). Well, I sent it off to get graded by s reputable company. It came back first, AU details - altered surfaces. I was a little confused so I resubmitted it, not with question, just sent it with another new group. Came back 65PL*. Go figure.
From AU details to 65PL, wow - I bet that was a good day for you!
True was a good day, but cost was more in line with 65 than AU details haha! I can only chalk that up to some kind of mistake. No way that was a grader seeing it that way at the time. It is the plate coin in multiple books!
