Thanks for taking a look. This coin in my opinion is everything you could ask for. It has beautiful copper tones, originality, the absolute slightest trace of wear if you look hard enough, no significant marks or distractions, tremendous, I appeal, etc. It is certainly to not disappoint!

Jon Lerner -- This is my coin and I can tell you it is a beauty in hand. I agree with you that if this coin were the size of a baseball that the spot on the cheek would bother me. But it's a QE which as you know are small which makes the spot even smaller in hand.
I have been selling most of my coins over the last couple of years and this is one of my last to go. I will certainly miss it but as most of you know there comes a time...

SUPERB GEM SLIDER 1838-C $2.50. PCGS AU58+ WITH CAC APPROVAL

The 1838-C is an extremely popular issue due to its status as the very first quarter eagle produced at the newly-opened Charlotte mint. It is a two-year type, as it and the 1839-C are the only quarter eagles from Charlotte which feature the Classic Head design. It is far scarcer than its counterpart the 1839-C although it is actually seen somewhat more often in higher grades. There are an estimated eight or nine known and it has been many years since a nice PCGS graded Uncirculated 1838-C quarter eagle has been available.
I tried (and tried and tried…) to convince PCGS that this coin was an MS61 and I honestly still believe that it is. Perhaps the new owner will have better luck (and not waste as much on grading fees!) than I did. What PCGS believes is wear is actually slight weakness of strike which is visible on the curls over Liberty’s ear and at the juncture of the shield and the inner portion of the eagle’s right wing. There is a ton of mint frost on both sides and this is covered by superb natural fiery reddish-gold color which is most visible at the lower obverse and the reverse border. On the obverse, there is a small mint-made chip in the planchet near star twelve and an inconsequential spot in the planchet on the cheek. This coin has superb overall eye appeal and I think it compares favorably to the handful of MS61 and even MS62 1838-C quarter eagles which I have sold in the past.
Just one CAC approved 1838-C quarter eagle in PCGS AU58 has ever sold at auction and it brought $17,625 as Heritage 2012 ANA: 5289. While that coin was very nice (I placed it with a good client a number of years ago) it doesn’t remotely compare to the piece offered here.
I can’t imagine a nicer example of this ultra-popular issue becoming available any time soon and this is likely to be one of my favorite coins offered for sale in 2022!
I have seen dozens of 38-Cs in hand as part of my research, owned a few, including the finest known MS-64. I understand what Doug W is saying that this coin could be be Mint State. He points out areas of weak strike, and does not point out the right wing tip, which one might view as wear, is actually the weakest area struck.
I do not have in my notes as ever having seen this coin in hand. But based on the Trueview, I can see that this coin is likely a spectacular example of an 1838-C quarter eagle. I am sure that it has more eye appeal than many of the Mint State graded coins, which is only a handful to begin with.
Perhaps I’m mistaken but I always thought it was bad etiquette to critique coins for sale on the BST.
