Brian Gray OUT at Leaf

I saw a tweet that he is leaving due to his health and that he has a replacement. As everyone knows I am a Leaf fan and I met Brian at a couple of Nationals I attend in 2013-2015. I think this is bad news for the hobby. I wonder if this is another indirect impact of Fanatics taking over the modern hobby.

    Hope his health recovers. Depending on what happens with the Panini lawsuit over the Fanatics Monopoly, Leaf could get a whole lot more valuable. Think he has innovated a lot at Leaf and showed that with the right autographs and much better odds than the mainstream product some people will collect. He has always believed that if he had deep pockets to go to court he could use images that have the players in uniforms - the same way newspapers and magazines and websites can - without having to pay the league. Logos on the cards themselves and access is all he believed the leagues could sell. Feel well Brian.

    SCR is hinting that he may pop up at Fanatics. We should know in a few months. If you don’t collect modern then you never heard of him. Unlike other people in our hobby he tried to be fair to collectors. When he couldn’t get Bryce Young autos for redemptions due to Fanatics, he offered Trevor Lawrence as a substitute.

    When they announced another tour, I said I won't get fooled again.

    I remember their "farewell" tour at Shea Stadium with the Clash in 1983. I lost track of how many "farewell" tours they had since then.

    Brian Gray is a walking dumpster fire who believes he should be the face of Leaf and be out there intermingling with the public. The problem is, the guy is HORRIBLE at public relations. Every time he attempts to reach out to the public he just ends up insulting everyone and getting on his high horse. He's incredibly obnoxious and should never be allowed to have access to the public. Just my observations, I've never personally interacted with him.

    This is good for Leaf, bad for Fanatics if they're taking him on.

    If the target audience for future sales is not the collector of vintage then maybe it all makes sense? 🤔

    It seems like there will be lawsuits and that can only hurt the collectors and employees at the end of the day. The lawyers are probably hard at work on this but it's possible even the lawyers are changing sides too since they often follow the money goes.

    I don't know what options Fanatics has but Brian Gray is a big name that they must consider. The little guys, like us, only see or read a small portion of how these people operate on a daily basis. Their networks, closed door conversations, and ideas are not something we are privy to.
