Hi guys,
While visiting my LCS this afternoon. A gentleman walked in saying his grandfather left him this coin. It appeared to be the error 1913 V Nickel? This could be the 6th one found? The man didn't try to pull a fast one by asking the owner, "if this is real?"
It looks real, except for a strange "3". It almost looks upside down. The owner told him to send it in to PCGS! She wasn't too sure herself?
I asked him if I could take a picture of it?
He said, sure! But then quickly changing his mind. I understand.
He seems legit of a guy. When I was allowed to gaze on it, he asked to borrow my loupe.
Lol. He didn't even know how to use it! Lol
So, obviously, not a coin collector.
He said he was going to submit it to PCGS.
He'll let us know when he does.
So, if you see in Coin World or in any Numismatic news that the
6th 1913 V Nickel,
Surfaced!
You'll all know when it did and where!
We wished him GOOD LUCK!
Wow, if it happens to be...

"Jesus died for you and for me, Thank you,Jesus"!!!

    "Is this real?"

"It looks real, except for a strange "3". It almost looks upside down."

In court that exchange would be considered 'asked and answered'.

She does not sound like a very skilled numismatist from this post, that or she simply doesn't do well with confrontation and just wanted the guy out of the store. Telling your customers to waste money on an obvious counterfeit or damaged coin seems like bad business to me and an LCS to be avoided.

What the heck is "the error V nickel"?

The 1st 5 weren't "found". They were all together in one man's possession. To whom did he give the "extra" one?

When one of the five was unaccounted for, you had a one in 100,000 chance. Now it’s zero.

The flea market down the street from me has a guy who has a bucket of 1804 dollars. Just wait till word of that hoard gets out.....

For those who may not have the full background, nickel number 5 was evaluated as counterfeit by a well known company. Fortunately, second opinions were sought.

I'm not sure of the relevance to this thread.

Coin #5 was one of the original 5 and in the hands of the known owner who had been killed in a horrible car wreck with the coin. The theory at the time of the misattribution was that Walton might have had a fake that he displayed at shows so he could leave the original in the safe.
That, of course, proved incorrect 40 years later However, unlike the (fake) coin in this thread, it was not discovered after the original 5 Brown coins. The Walton coin had direct provenance to Samuel Brown and Johnson/Newman.

It is impossible for there to be a 6th unless Brown sold or have away the 6th coin before coming forward with the other 5.

The 'relevance' is that many people on here 'might' like to know some history. You have (correctly) further expanded upon the details and for that we (I) thank you.

But, just as in another thread we have told someone their 'discovery' story doesn't make something authentic, in this case the rendering of an 'inauthentic' opinion should not have occurred because of peripheral background info either. ...what's good for the goose....etc.

Opinion offered in good faith. Thanks.
