I acquired this 1942-D contemporary counterfeit over the weekend. I own several contemporary counterfeit WLH's, and this one is by far the best made one I've seen so far. The others have been far more mushy and lacking in detail. Based on the wear, this fooled some people back in the day...

    i bet half my collection is counterfeit....i can never tell by looking at photos on line that a coin is real/fake

    1. Overall appearance is mushy and lacks detail
    2. The color is off. If you look closely you can see it had a silver-colored wash on it at one point to give it the appearance of being silver. From it's time in circulation, this has worn off on the high points of the design, revealing the darker 'pot metal' underneath.
    3. The rims are off. They are very thick for a WLH of this era, especially on the obverse.
    4. There is some porosity on both sides of the coin, indicating the coin could have been cast.
    5. I haven't weighed it, but having handled thousands of genuine ones, this one definitely feels light.

    I generally agree bad pics make it tough sometimes. But in the case of these, many are pretty obvious. The OP coin is quite good for a counterfeit, and this is not an uncommon series to see counterfeits, especially cast counterfeits!

    Yes, for a cast counterfeit WLH your example is quite nice. Some die struck counterfeit WLHs are also quite good, such as this 1921 made from hand-made dies.
